Farhan Akhtar comments on ‘Animal’, says the character is problematic

Helmed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga under T-Series, Bhadrakali Pictures and Cine 1 Studios’ production, Animal was released on December 1,2023. Since then, the film has been continuously in discussion. Though the film was excessively successful at the box office, it got slammed for its portrayal of brutal violence and toxic masculinity.

Farhan Akhtar’s opinion on the film

In a recent interview with Faye D’Souza, filmmaker-actor Farhan Akhtar expressed his views on the Ranbir Kapoor starrer Animal.

“The film didn’t work for me,” said the actor. Farhan Akhtar appreciated Ranbir Kapoor‘s performance and the film’s background score. But the actor wouldn’t recommend somebody to watch the film. The film doesn’t resonate with him. In the interview, Farhan Akhtar said, “I feel that the character is problematic.”

About Animal

Animal revolves around the life of Ranvijay Singh portrayed by Ranbir Kapoor. Ranvijay singh is a son of an industrialist, portrayed by Anil Kapoor. Ranvijay’s relationship with his father is strained and tumultuous, filled with unspoken resentment and unresolved conflicts.

When a murder attempt is made on his father, Ranvijay is forced to confront his past and the demons that have shaped him. He embarks on a path of vengeance, seeking justice for his father and unraveling the secrets that lie at the heart of his family’s empire.

As Ranvijay delves deeper into the underworld, he encounters a dangerous rival and also forms an extra marital relationship with a mysterious woman as part of a plan.

The film’s narrative is driven by intense action sequences and brutal violence, reflecting Rannvijay’s ruthless nature. However, beneath the surface lies a more nuanced exploration of themes such as family dynamics, the destructive consequences of violence, and the struggle to reconcile personal demons with societal expectations.

Rannvijay’s journey is marked by a constant internal conflict between his desire for revenge and his longing for a genuine connection with others. His relationship with his father is a central element of the film, as he grapples with the legacy of his family’s wealth and power. The film also explores the complexities of masculinity and the toxic societal pressures that can lead to violence.

The Cast

Animal is a visually striking film with powerful performances from its ensemble cast. The film stars Ranbir Kapoor in the lead role as Ranvijay Singh. Alongside Ranbir Kapoor, the film casts Anil Kapoor in a dual role as Balbir Singh, father of Ranvijay Singh and Kailash Petkar; Charu Shankar as Jyoti Singh, Ranvijay’s Mother; Bobby Deol as Abrar Haque; Rashmika Mandanna as Geetanjali Iyengar Singh, Ranvijay’s wife; Tripti Dimri as Zoya; Shakti Kapoor and Prem Chopra.
