Fashion at Indian Couture Week – 6 Highlights From The Night

The Indian Couture Week kickstarted on the 24th of July, and fashion enthusiasts were in for a treat until the 31st of July in New Delhi. The Hyundai India Couture Week, in association with Reliance Brands (an FDCI initiative), delivered an 8-day extravaganza, featuring over 14 shows that showcased the exquisite craftsmanship of some of India’s most celebrated designers.

From the timeless elegance of Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla to the avant-garde creations of Gaurav Gupta, and from the otherworldliness of Tarun Tahiliani to the unapologetic maximalism of Falguni and Shane Peacock, the event was a celebration of India’s rich fashion heritage blending traditional craftmanship with contemporary elegance. Let’s look at some of the best ensembles from this week of creative brilliance and splendour!

Arunodaya By Gaurav Gupta

Gaurav Gupta’s Arunodoya aims to capture the transition from darkness to light. It was story told by colours as they evolved from blues and midnight hues to silvers and blush. Arunodaya signifies hope, early dawn and infinite possibilities. Shimmering skirts with wide capes and drapes and sculpted details on shoulders and waist gave it a celestial look. Vedang Raina and Khushi Kapoor walked the ramp as showstoppers for this serene collection.

Asal and Mard By Abu Jani And Sandeep Khosla

With ‘Disco Mujra’ as the theme, ‘Asal’ and ‘Mard’ by Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla was a perfect blend of tradition and modern flair. The ‘Asal Bride’ was a nothing less than modern elegance with lehengas in deep hues of reds, gold, and green with Zardozi and Gota work, while the ‘Regal Groom of Mard’ was full of bold borders and dramatic embroideries. Wamiqa Gabbi and Taha Shah were the showstoppers for the event.

Muraqqa By JJ Valaya

Muraqqa historically is a patchwork that compiles various artistic elements. Muraqqa was nothing short of regal extravaganza with rich textiles and meticulous  craftmanship. Inspired by the Persian and Ottoman fabrics and the Mughal inlays the ensembles were made with velvet and silk which were blended with JJ signature style that combined both of royalty and art deco . The lehengas, sherwanis were in variations of reds and golds and honoured the Islamic art from Delhi and Istanbul.

Otherworldly By Tarun Tahiliani

Tarun Tahiliani’s show was truly out of this world, and he even did it twice! Recently, Tahiliani faced criticism for the ceremonial attire designed by his brand Tasva for the Indian Olympic contingent. However, he more than made up for it with his latest collection. The show featured over 100 looks accompanied by live Sufi music. It showcased Tahiliani’s signature use of traditional crafts such as chikankari and mukaish, combined with crystals and 3-D appliqué work, reflecting the ‘India Modern’ sensibility that the designer is known for.

Inspired by the Greek Goddess of future , Amit Aggrawal collection explored the universe and time, showcasing that nothing happens without the influence of the universe. Aggrawal believes that we exist in a time loop, He used pre-owned Banarasi sarees and repurposed them while creating new sarees and essentially giving them a new life. Metallics and silver hues with structure form and over the top head pieces were theme of the night.

Rang Mahal By Falguni And Shane Peacock

The grand finale was dominated by all things bling and sequins. Hand woven saris, intricate embroidery and luxurious silk was paired with animal symbolism like parrots and peacock. ‘Rang Mahal’ by Falguni And Shane Peacock encapsulated vivid hues, diverse cultural elements, and exquisite craftsmanship that define our country’s heritage. Traditional elements were married with contemporary designs due to their collaboration with Swadesh. Taking inspiration from the grandeur of palaces, each ensemble was crafted by master artisans and skilled weavers. The designer duo have used elegant kanjeevarams, Banarasi brocades and chikankari work. Vicky Kaushal and Rashmika Mandanna closed the show in ivory and gold hues.
