Severe devastation struck West Bengal’s Jalpaiguri district, claiming the lives of at least five individuals and leaving many injured in its wake. The region was ravaged by a ferocious storm, accompanied by heavy rainfall and powerful winds. The sudden onslaught of nature’s fury resulted in widespread chaos, with reports of casualties, injuries, structural damage to homes, uprooted trees, and toppled electricity poles.

Expressing her condolences, Chief Minister Banerjee took to X to convey her sympathies and assure the public of immediate action. She lamented the tragic loss of lives and pledged the full support of the district and block administration, police force, Disaster Management Group (DMG), and Quick Response Teams (QRT) in undertaking robust disaster management operations. Their primary focus was on providing timely relief and assistance to the affected populace.

Efforts to mitigate the crisis were swiftly initiated, with affected individuals being relocated to safer areas to shield them from further harm. In her statement, the CM underscored the government’s commitment to aiding the victims by announcing compensation for the families of those who lost their lives, as well as for the injured, in accordance with established protocols and guidelines.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee swiftly altered her plans, making her way to Jalpaiguri late on Sunday night to address the aftermath of a devastating cyclone that wreaked havoc in the region. Upon arrival, she wasted no time in assessing the situation firsthand, paying a visit to the Jalpaiguri Super Specialty Hospital to extend her support to those affected by the calamity.

In a press briefing, Mamata Banerjee solemnly acknowledged the tragic toll exacted by the disaster, revealing that numerous homes lay damaged the loss of five lives had been reported. Additionally, she disclosed that two individuals remained in critical condition, underscoring the severity of the cyclone’s impact on the community.

Assuring the populace of her government’s unwavering commitment to their welfare, the chief minister emphasized the proactive stance taken by the administration in extending aid to those in distress. Expressing her heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families, our collective  she conveyed empathetically.

Furthermore, she lauded the tireless efforts of the administration in executing swift and effective disaster management measures, expressing gratitude for their dedication and resilience amidst the crisis.

West Bengal Leader of Opposition meets the people admitted to the Hospital

Opposition leader Subvendu Adhikari offered commendation for the commendable efforts of Jalpaiguri Medical College Hospital’s health services during his visit to cyclone-injured individuals. However, alongside the praise, he voiced grievances and announced plans to directly engage with affected communities. During his Monday afternoon visit, Shubhendu conversed with patients across various hospital wards for approximately thirty minutes. Upon departure, he lauded the dedication of doctors, health workers, and nurses, noting their round-the-clock commitment.

Additionally, he urged voluntary organizations to persist in their relief endeavors and pledged to venture into affected villages himself. Demonstrating a commitment to transparency, Shubhendu expressed intent to address grievances directly within the community rather than within the hospital’s confines, stating, “I will not voice hospital allegations here. The hospital remains silent. Instead, I’ll convey my concerns directly to the villages.” This proactive approach underscores Suvendu’s dedication to both acknowledging commendable efforts and addressing areas in need of improvement within the healthcare system.
