The father of the 14-year-old Colt Gray was arrested on Thursday in connection with the shooting that killed four people and wounded nine at Apalachee High school.

According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Colin Gray, 54, was charged with eight counts of child abuse, two counts of second-degree murder, and four counts of involuntary manslaughter. Director of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Chris Hosey said during a press conference, “Mr. Gray knowingly allowed his son Colt to possess a weapon,” which is the basis for these accusations.

According to officials, Colt Gray will face an adult trial on four counts of criminal murder. In an interview with the Washington Post on Thursday, his aunt Annie Brown said that the young man had been “begging for help from everybody around him.” She claimed that before the incident, he was having mental health issues. She bemoaned, “The adults around him failed him.”

Someone repeatedly hammered on his classroom door and yelled for it to be opened as the teachers and students crowded into the space. More gunfire and screaming were audible to Caldera after the knocking ended. He said that, according to Reuters, his class was later evacuated to the school’s football field.

Sheriff Jud Smith stated, “What we see behind us is an evil thing today,” at a brief press conference held on school property.

On the social media platform X, Georgia Governor Brian Kemp announced that state agencies were handling the situation.

Following a briefing on the shooting, the White House released a statement stating that President Joe Biden “and his administration will continue coordinating with federal, state, and local officials as we receive more information.”

In the last 20 years, there have been hundreds of shootings within schools and colleges in the United States; the deadliest of them occurred at Virginia Tech in 2007 and resulted in over 30 fatalities. The bloodshed has spurred a fierce debate about American gun rules and the Second Amendment, which protects the right “to keep and bear arms.”
