Finally! Novak Djokovic completes his career ‘Golden Slam’

Olympic tennis has never seen such a nail biting final before. Since the return of tennis to the Olympics in 1988 there has never been a boys’ final with such excitement. What a fight Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz gave. This match will be remembered for a long time in the gold medal match between the present and the future of tennis.

Novak Djokovic made history at the age of 37. The holder of the most Grand Slams in men’s tennis won his first Olympic gold in his fifth attempt. The 24-time Grand Slam champion won Sunday’s final by 7-6 (7/3), 7-6 (7/2).

The two-set match ended in 2 hours and 50 minutes. This statistic tells how much Djokovic-Alcaraz fought for each point. No one could break anyone’s service in both sets. However, the duo put up an incredible fight in 24 games, playing perfect tennis to win every point.

The path of winning

The path of winning the gold was not easy. In the second round, the old enemy and the legend of Roland Garros, Rafael Nadal, got ahead. But this Nadal was not the Nadal of yesteryear, who could dominate at will on the court of Surrey in Paris. Also, Nadal’s hunger was somewhat less than Djokovic’s, having already won gold at the Olympics. Djokovic did not miss the chance. Surkir just blew the king of the court. Stephanos Chichipas of Greece fell in front in the quarter finals. In the past Chichipas took two sets from Djokovic in the French Open final. But he could not stand in front of Djokovic, who was aiming to win Olympic gold.

As a result, Djokovic had only one obstacle in front of him. Carlos Alcaraz. Not even a month has passed since the Wimbledon final loss in straight sets. The wound in Djokovic’s heart was burning, it was understood by watching his play throughout the match that day. Despite the knee injury, he did not stop giving 100 percent in any match. That effort worked. Finally, the dream of ‘Golden Slam’ has been fulfilled.

In the end, however, the future of tennis Alcaraz lost to a seasoned veteran named Novak Djokovic. Last year Alcaraz defeated Djokovic in the final at the All England Club, but Djokovic won in the semifinals of the 2023 French Open, the annual clay-court tournament held at Roland Garros.

Djokovic, who had knee surgery a month ago, had to play the entire tournament with tape on his right leg.

The much awaited win

Finally, after 16 years of waiting, Djokovic was able to smile at the Olympic gold. After getting the last point, he covered his face and cried tears of happiness. He cried with the joy of finally completing his career ‘Golden Slam’.

In 2008, Djokovic won the bronze medal in the Olympics organised in Beijing. He also holds the record for the longest number of weeks at the top in the world tennis rankings. And since 1908, he is the oldest man to win gold in singles tennis.

Apart from this victory, Novak also achieved another feat. Djokovic became only the fifth player in tennis history to complete the career Golden Slam by winning four Grand Slams and an Olympic gold. The streak was previously held by Steffi Graf, Andre Agassi, Rafael Nadal and Serena Williams. Now Novak Djokovic’s name has also been added to the list.
