Miuccia Prada’s Miu Miu show for spring/summer 2024 kept focusing on real-life fashion, featuring messy layers, comfy knitwear, short shorts, and colorful bandages as accessories. Here’s a report from Paris Fashion Week by Anders Christian Madsen.
Miu Miu is now widely seen on the streets of major cities worldwide. Miuccia Prada’s focus on a natural, everyday look has become popular over the past four seasons, mirroring people’s desire for authenticity. The word “real” is frequently associated with Miu Miu. On the last day of the show season, this idea of realness was emphasized and almost idolized, with real-life women like Sydney Sweeney, Emma Chamberlain, and Mia Goth watching from the front row.
Intensifying the Miu Miu aesthetics
Prada brought back the popular Miu Miu style, featuring short hemlines seen in knickers, shorts, and tennis skirts paired with big blazers and coats. Triangular tops with low-waisted trousers kept the trendy Y2K style loved by younger shoppers. The collection had a preppy feel, inspired by relaxed American fashion: jackets with crests, polo shirts, and shirts worn with Bermuda shorts.
A testament to living
Prada infused her garments and accessories with a unique touch, incorporating what she referred to as “traces of living.” These were subtle marks on leathers and suedes, along with fabrics that seemed faded, as if they had been washed numerous times. According to Prada, this pre-worn sensibility represented an expression of “existing love,” showcasing the affection people have for their clothes through repeated use.
This approach extended to the styling of the models, who sported a deliberately disheveled look with layered dresses, jumpsuits, cardigans, and T-shirts. This style evolution embraced the “barely-got-out-of-bed” appearance that had characterized the previous season’s collection. In a clever nod to real-life situations, the models even wore flip-flops, and their toes were adorned with neon-colored plasters, adding a touch of authenticity to the overall presentation. Prada’s design philosophy, rooted in the celebration of well-loved fashion pieces and everyday realism, truly shone through in this collection.
In today’s fashion, simplicity is key, evident in Miu Miu’s collection. However, Miuccia Prada understands that young Miu Miu enthusiasts love to dress up. The collection’s gleaming gold dresses and sophisticated coat bring a touch of fantasy, showing that embracing everyday style can still be exciting and stylish for those who love to express themselves through fashion.
A revered legacy
At the Miu Miu fashion show, many well-known faces graced the stage. Singer Troye Sivan represented the Miu Miu style for boys, while actors Cailee Spaeny and Mame Bineta Sane, along with artist Petra Collins and photographer Eddy Aldridge, added to the star-studded lineup. Among the new-generation Miu Miu girls, Gigi Hadid and Amelia Gray Hamlin returned, joining the original models who paved the way for Miu Miu’s success: May Anderson, Rosemary Ferguson, Liu Wen, and Karolin Wolter.
