India’s official entry for the 97th Academy Awards, Laapataa Ladies, has been rebranded as Lost Ladies to better resonate with international audiences. Directed by Kiran Rao and produced by Aamir Khan, the film is a heartfelt exploration of gender dynamics in rural India, told through a quirky and engaging narrative.
The campaign for the Oscars kicked off in New York, where Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao hosted a private screening at chef Vikas Khanna’s restaurant, The Bungalow. This event marked the beginning of their effort to build momentum for the film in the highly competitive Best International Feature category.
Accompanying the name change, the team released a vibrant new poster showcasing the two lead characters, Phool and Jaya, along with the tagline, “Sometimes you have to lose your way to find yourself”. The poster captures the film’s mix of humor and emotional depth, reflecting its universal appeal while staying true to its Indian roots.
Lost Ladies is set in 2001 and follows the journey of two brides, played by debutants Nitanshi Goel and Pratibha Ranta, who are mistakenly switched during a chaotic train ride. Their mix-up leads to a frantic search by their respective husbands, offering a humorous yet thought-provoking commentary on societal norms. The film also stars Ravi Kishan and Chhaya Kadam, whose performances add depth to this unique story.
The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2023, where it received critical acclaim for its storytelling and performances. With its themes of empowerment, self-discovery and cultural nuances, Lost Ladies has the potential to leave a mark on the international stage.
As India’s official Oscars entry, Lost Ladies faces stiff competition from films across the globe. However, its blend of relatability, humor and poignant storytelling gives it a distinct edge. The team behind the film is determined to ensure it reaches a wider audience and makes a compelling case for an Academy Award nomination.
With the 97th Oscars set for March 2, 2025, the journey for Lost Ladies has just begun. The film not only aims to win accolades but also hopes to spark conversations about the cultural and societal issues it highlights, proving that great stories can transcend borders.
