Shortly after the successful House of the Dragon, HBO is further expanding the universe of Game of Thrones with another prequel series.
HBO has officially announced a spinoff series that would be delving into the historical event of Aegon Targaryen’s conquest, which formed the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros. Celebrated screenwriter Mattson Tomlin, popularly known for his work on The Batman Part II, will be writing the series. Aegon’s Conquest serves as a direct predecessor to the popular TV series: House of the Dragon.
Mattson Tomlin, who has officially joined forces with the house, is known for his work on the Keanu Reeves action comic adaptation BRZRKR and an animated series of Terminator, which he is also overseeing for Netflix.
Game of Thrones spinoff: Aegon’s Conquest
ame of Thrones is one of the most famous series and the eight seasons which continued its run from 2011 to 2019 was a rage amongst the netizens for the incredible storyline and brilliant performance. The plot is basically about nine noble families who engage in war and bloodshed against each other to reign over the mythical land of Westeros. Meanwhile, another force rises after centuries that stands to threaten the existence of living men. The Game of Thrones series based on the A Song of Ice and Fire series of novels by George R.R. Martin, premiered on HBO in 2011.
The spinoff- Aegon’s Conquest is a direct prequel to the acclaimed House of the Dragon, narrating the story of Targaryen’s vicious and brutal conquest of Westeros. The series follows the invader Aegon Targaryen, who took control of the continent of Westeros with his sister-wives, Rhaenys and Visenya, accompanied by their dragons. Aegon successfully united six of the Seven Kingdoms in just two years, leaving behind Dorne that successfully resisted.
Based on previous speculations, the show will track the relentless Aegon Targaryen and his dragon-riding sister-wives, Rhaenys and Visenya. Following the tradition, Queen Rhaenys Targaryen, just like her elder sister Visenya, was betrothed to King Aegon I Targaryen, the first ruler of the Seven Kingdoms and king on the Iron Throne. Fans might expect a grim story of deception, conquest, and the foundation of the Seven Kingdoms that we are all accustomed with. Set years before the original show, it will explore deep into the Targaryen dynasty’s ruthless ascent to power. One source described the project as undertaking a “back to basics” approach to George R.R. Martin’s epic fantasy world.
The first spinoff of Game of Thrones– House of Dragon served as a prequel which premiered on August 21, 2022. It is the second television series based on the A Song of Ice and Fire franchise. The series took the world by storm garnering the highest viewership ratings when it was on air. The star-cast of House of Dragon featured Milly Alcock, Emma D’Arcy, Matt Smith, Olivia Cooke, Ewan Mitchell, Emily Carey, Eve Best and Paddy Considine. It tracks the story of two siblings who fight for their way into the throne after the death of their father, causing a civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons.
Since Thrones wrapped up in 2019, there have been multiple ideas of prequels put into development, some of them considered no longer active — though HBO prefers to keep it under covers to not completely discard any option off the table, as there’s always the opportunity of turning a once-promising idea to the big screen.
The efforts have successfully spawned two greenlit series: House of the Dragon, which drops its second season this summer; and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight, which begins its production this year and is based on Martin’s Dunk and Egg novellas.
