Ghazal singer Pankaj Udhas abodes at the age of 72

Renowned Ghazal and playback singer Pankaj Udhas passed away on 26 February 2024 in Mumbai due to a prolonged illness. This news was conveyed by his daughter, Nayaab Udhas, who mentioned the details of his funeral.

Death of Pankaj Udhas

Pankaj Udhas died yesterday morning at around 11 AM at Breach Candy Hospital Trust in Mumbai, Maharashtra. The reason stated for his demise is his prolonged illness. His daughter informed via Instagram the last rites will be performed on 27 February from 3-5 PM at Hindu Crematorium in Worli, Mumbai.

Pankaj Udhas’ early life

Pankaj Udhas, the illustrious Indian ghazal singer, indeed graced the world with his talent and melodious voice. Born on May 17, 1951, in Jetpur, Gujarat, India, his journey into the realm of music was one marked by dedication and passion. Seeing his brothers, Udhas also displayed a remarkable passion for music from an early age.

His resolve led him to enroll in Rajkot’s Sangeet Academy, where he embarked on his formal musical education. He also learnt Hindustani vocal classical music under Ghulam Qadir Khan Sahab

Pankaj Udhas’ career

His breakthrough came with the album “Aahat” in 1980, which catapulted him to fame and established him as one of the leading ghazal singers in India. Pankaj Udhas gained popularity in the 1980s and 1990s for his soulful renditions of ghazals, a form of poetic and musical expression in Urdu.

Some of his most famous ghazals include “Chitthi Aayi Hai (1988),” “Jeeye To Jeeye Kaise (1991),” “Na Kajre Ki Dhar,” and “Aur Aahista Kijiye Baatein.” His distinctive voice has earned him a dedicated fan base. Pankaj Udhas has also released numerous albums over the years, contributing significantly to the genre of ghazals in the Indian music industry.

His last album was “Raat Bhar Tanha Raha” from the movie “Dil Toh Deewana Hai’ which was released in 2016. He has received several awards for his contributions to the field of music, acknowledging his impact on ghazal singing in India. These awards not only honored his musical prowess but also celebrated his ability to evoke profound emotions through his timeless melodies.

Beyond his musical endeavors, Pankaj Udhas also devoted himself to various philanthropic and social causes, embodying the spirit of compassion and altruism. The hospital where Pankaj Udhas died said, “Not only has this been a personal tragedy, but the country has also lost a wonderful human being and brilliant vocalist.”

John Abraham expressed grief, stating, “You held me tight when I first came here. I consider you to be my mentor in many respects. I hope your last resting place is tranquil. We shall always miss you.”

Sonu Nigam stated, “Today, one of the most significant aspects of my youth is gone. I will always miss you, Shri Pankaj Udhas ji. Knowing you are no longer with me makes my heart cry. I am grateful that you are present. Om Shanti.”

Additionally, PM Narendra Modi shared, saying, “He is a brilliant example of Indian music, with tunes that have endured for decades. I can still clearly recall every single thing I’ve done with him throughout the years. After his departure, there will always be a void in the music business. My condolences go out to his supporters and family. Om Shanti.”

“Pankaj Udhas ji, who received the Padma Shri and other accolades, was instrumental in making music popular. With sadness, President Draupadi Murmu said, “My condolences to his family and fans.”
