The photos provided by the satellite reveal more than 25,000 acres of land of the capital and the largest city of Greece has charred because of the wildfire. The land is almost twice the size of Manhattan City.

On the day of the fire, hundreds of firemen had to gather to Limit the fire’s spread. This has become Greece’s deadliest wildfire of the year. Copernicus Emergency Management Service (EMS) shared an image on the social media platform “X” to further illustrate the severity and extent of this tragic destruction.

The Wildfires are continuously advancing towards Athens, urging thousands of people to flee their homes and immediate evacuation of the region. The strong gust of wind along with the scorching hot and combined with the driest summer climate of Greece fueled the fire to spread wildly. The flames were sparked in multiple ways. The severe fire took the life of an individual, many people were injured including the locals and firefighters. According to fire department spokesman Vassilis Vathrakogiannis, the waves of gusts touched seven on the Beaufort scale, as for the wind strength a moderate gale force was recorded.

The Greek officials called for help from the  Copernicus Emergency Management Service (EMS), for an earth observation programme. The program was supposed to use the satellite to gather some imagery to acquire information about the disaster that took place, to act upon and set up emergency responses for disaster management. The data provided by the Copernicus (EMS) data were utilised to chalk out the extent of land to which the damage took place.

Sentinel-2 satellite that captured the pictures of the fire showcased almost 170 active fires. Some of the fire was located only a few miles away from the heart of the capital city, Athens. An estimated 3 million residents live there. CNN has notified that the wildfire in Greece is not one of the unsuspected disasters, and it happens on a yearly basis, but no one was prepared for the outrage and none of the fires before came so near to the country’s capital city.

Further on Monday, The NOAA satellite, that was passing over the affected region recorded the vivid orange-coloured smoke billowing from the fire burning the Greece.

NOAA further recorded the smoke cloud that spread 180 miles (300 kilometres) across the wide field. The fire was noticeably moving southwestward towards the Libya region in North America.
