On November 3, 2024, at least 12 people were injured when grenades detonated in a
packed Sunday market in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir. The blasts exploded right near the
heavily fortified Tourist Reception Centre.

Incident Details
According to sources, the grenade was hurled toward a CRPF bunker; however, it did not
land there and exploded near a crowded market area. Among the injured are eight males
and one female; all of them are stable and have been shifted to SMHS for treatment.

Immediate Response
Just within hours of the explosion, police and paramilitary troops flocked to the place in
order to evacuate the casualties and start manhunts to apprehend the criminals involved.
The place was locked down as security forces started deep investigations to pinpoint the
masterminds of the deadly act.

Official Respond
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah condemned the attack in no uncertain
terms, terming it “deeply disturbing”. He said that there is no excuse for attacking civilian
populations, and he urged the security agencies to redouble their efforts to avoid such
incidents, so the people can live without fear. Abdullah spoke as violence continued to grip the region; a top commander from the terrorist group Lashkar-e-Taiba was killed a day
ago.

The attack has left a trail of security issues in Jammu and Kashmir, following a series of
violent incidents that have taken place in the recent past. Local leaders including Abdullah
and Congress’ Jammu and Kashmir unit chief Tariq Hameed Karra demanded effective
measures to ensure public safety so that such attacks do not recur.

This is one of the most severe attacks in Srinagar in over a year, and the city has been seeing
the fallouts of tensions in the area. The Sunday market is a major shopping destination in
winter months, which attracts large crowds that become vulnerable during such violent
outbursts.

As investigations continue, the authorities are under pressure to restore safety and
confidence among the local population amidst rising fears of further violence.
