Mumbai Indians announces Hardik Pandya as their next captain for the upcoming 2024 IPL season. This marks the end of a beautiful 10-year captainship era for Rohit Sharma. He started leading MI in 2013 and has won 5 IPL titles since then. After a great journey of being the MI captain for 10 years, the franchise decided to replace Rohit Sharma with Hardik Pandya for a smooth transition.
Hardik Pandya to lead Mumbai Indians IPL 2024
Hardik Pandya left GT after two successful seasons of captaincy and one IPL title to be led forward by Young talent Shubman Gill for the 2024 IPL season. Hardik Pandya was traded to Mumbai Indians after great speculations. Mumbai Indians due to the lack of budget had to trade Cameron Green to Royal Challengers Banglore. Rohit Sharma has won 5 IPL titles as Mumbai Indians Captain in the years 2013,2015,2017,2019 and 2020 making Mumbai Indians one of the most successful franchises after Chennai Super Kings.
All-rounder Hardik Pandya made his IPL debut in 2015 playing for Mumbai Indians. The domestic Baroda cricket player came to notice from his first match against RCB. Hardik Pandya became an important player for MI with his impactful performances since his debut. Hardik Pandya left Mumbai Indians after the 2021 IPL season and joined GT as the Captain and won their Maiden IPL title in the same year by defeating Rajasthan Royals in the 2022 finals. He led Gujarat Titans till the end of the 2023 season but lost the finals against Chennai Super Kings captained by MS Dhoni. This made CSK the next team to hold 5 IPL titles after Mumbai Indians.
Mumbai Indians fans are sad with the recent announcement of the shift in the captaincy. Rohit Sharma had led MI after Ricky Ponting and had set the pitch on fire with his amazing batting and captaincy skills winning millions of hearts. But the 36-year-old captain could not show much of his batting expertise in recent IPL seasons. Further, the franchise took this decision for a smooth transition as Hardik Pandya can lead the team under the presence of Rohit Sharma strengthening the team for the future.
This shift of captaincy may help Rohit Sharma to meet his BCCI commitments as an Indian Captain with much more ease than before. Indian opener and Captain Rohit Sharma has successfully led team India in ICC ODI World Cup 2023 but unfortunately lost the finals against Australia on 19th November 2023. With the upcoming T20 World Cup in June 2024, Rohit Sharma can now lead his team with even more enthusiasm and grit.
MI and CSK’s heartfelt message to Indian Skipper
Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings hold an unsaid rivalry under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma and MS Dhoni as both teams are the best in IPL. CSK took their social media and said “ A decade of spirited challenge ! Much respect, Rohit”. Hours after announcing Hardik Pandya as a new captain MI shared a heartfelt tributary post for Sharma on their social media saying “Dear Rohit, In victories and defeats, you asked us to smile.
