Heavy Rains in Bengaluru Wreaks Havoc in the City

Heavy downpour of rain water has created havoc in Bengaluru, the IT hub of India. The rainfall which has been present for the last few days has caused a lot of damage in the city. Heavy rainfall has made the daily life of people difficult, with many stranded and the roads being flooded with water. 

An under-constructed building collapsed in the Horamuvu Agara area, which took eight lives as reported by ANI. The restoration work has been started by the officials in the area.

IMD issues Yellow Alert

Looking at the heavy rainfall situation in the city, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert. The yellow alert warning was issued and for the safety of children the schools and the Anganwadi centres were closed.

The rainfall caused traffic jams in some areas. The employees working in different private organisations were recommended to work from home.

Yellow alert points out towards bad weather conditions due to heavy rainfall and the weather to become likely worse.

Rescue Operations in Place

Heavy rains in the region caused flood like situations in some areas. The residents of such areas were evacuated with the help of NDRF. 

Water entered the Kendriya Vihar apartment complex in Yelahanka. The residents got stranded because of water accumulation. The NDRF officials carried out the rescue work in the water logged area and the stuck residents of the complex were taken out safely with the help of boats.

A resident also complained about the situation, and asked for a permanent solution as reported by ANI. Another resident said that they were glad to be rescued in an emergency situation and wanted a permanent solution to the problem.

The unprecedented rainfall in the region also flooded some tech parks, which forced the employees to be stuck inside.

To deal with the crisis that unfolded due to rain and flooding the state government has formed a committee that will address the flood crisis.

The Deputy Chief Minister of the state DK Shivakumar will be the chairman of the panel.

The panel will work towards strengthening infrastructure in the city with a focus on long term measures, so as to mitigate the climate crisis.

The Deputy Chief Minister also visited the Yelahanka area in which water logging happened and the residents were rescued.

Heavy Rains Disturbs Daily Life

Bengaluru, the ‘Silicon Valley of India’, is a major centre of IT offices. The city has a bustling work culture surrounded by companies, start-ups. The past few days it rained heavily, which caused flood like situations disrupting the daily life of people and causing problems. 

Social Media can be seen discussing the situation and the problems faced by commuters. Videos on social media show traffic congestion for hours which forced the people to walk after being stuck in the traffic for hours. 

Water overflowing on the roads made the situation much worse.

The social media users complained about the flood like situation in the city.

Urban Planning Need of the Hour

India is currently experiencing economic growth. There has been an increase in urbanisation in the country but it is uneven. 

The urban areas attract a huge number of population in search of good work opportunities and to improve the standard of living. This is the cause of increasing population in urban areas. 

The planning in urban areas is uneven which gives rise to various problems.

Flash floods and water logging are the problems faced by the cities as can be seen in recent times. Heavy downpour leads to flood like situation. Certain mitigation measures are to be put in place to tackle the problem of floods in cities like setting up flood-resilient infrastructure along with proper urban planning.
