Kangana Amardeep Ranaut is an actress, filmmaker, and politician serving as a Member of Parliament for the Mandi constituency since June 2024. Recognised for her part in female-centric Hindi films, Ranaut has been awarded four National Film Awards and five Filmfare Awards among several other honours. In 2020, she was awarded Padma Shri, the fourth-highest civilian award of India.

Ranaut started her own production house Manikarnika Films in 2020 with herself as director and producer. She is one of those most stylish celebrities who appears in the media and is vocal about everything.

Many a time, she shares views that are similar to the opinions of right-wing people and the Bharatiya Janata Party. Besides that, frequent quarrels in her personal and professional life have spawned a lot of controversy.

Ranaut is an active social media commentator who frequently shares her political views, discusses her religion and its practices, and criticizes liberals and the Hindi film industry. Adopting a loudmouthed and aggressive style of speaking, she has become embroiled in several open disputes with colleagues that have received considerable media attention.

In May 2021, Twitter permanently suspended her account for repeated violations of its policies on abusive behaviour and hateful conduct. Months later, though, she resurfaced on the site when the ban was lifted in January 2023.

Ranaut has not shied away from speaking her mind on political figures, as a result of which she received a lot of flak from many leaders. In September 2020, Ranaut accused the then Chief Minister, Uddhav Thackeray, and his government of mishandling the sudden death of actor Sushant Singh Rajput. She was then given death threats by many Shiv Sena leaders, including Sanjay Raut.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation sent a backdated notice for illegal modifications to her house and demolished those parts at the behest of Shiv Sena. Afterwards, the Bombay High Court chastised the BMC, ruled in Ranaut’s favour, ordered the BMC to pay her compensation, and termed the demolition as malafide.

In view of the threats she received, Ranaut was provided security from the Central Government by the Central Reserve Police Force.

The BJP fielded her from the Mandi Lok Sabha constituency for the 2024 Indian general election, which was conducted in March 2024. She won by defeating her key opponent Vikramaditya Singh. On June 6, 2024 On way to Chandigarh Airport, a CISF constable slapped her following her remarks over the protesting farmers against some laws.

The Himachal Pradesh High Court, on a petition by a resident of Kinnaur praying for declaring the election of Kangana Ranaut, BJP’s Lok Sabha representative from Mandi, as null and void, issued a notice to her. It is claimed in the petition that his nomination papers for the Lok Sabha constituency were wrongly rejected. Justice Jyotsna Rewal has asked Kangana Ranaut to respond by August 21.

She won the Mandi Lok Sabha seat by defeating Congress contender Vikramaditya Singh with a margin of 74,755 votes. She garnered 537,002 votes, while Singh received 462,267 votes.

The petitioner, Layak Ram Negi, has alleged that the rejection of his nomination papers by the Deputy Commissioner of Mandi, who served as returning officer, was unjust and has included the returning officer in his complaint.

The contestant, a retired forest department employee, Negi, claimed that he had furnished a ‘no dues certificate’ from the department along with his nomination papers as an independent candidate. He had filed his nomination on 14 May and completed all required documentation by 15 May.

He has claimed that a single day was granted to him for submitting the ‘no dues certificate’ relating to electricity, water, and telephone departments. Even after he furnished the requisite certificates, his nomination papers were rejected as the Returning Officer did not accept the same.

Negi prayed that he could have easily won the election if the rejection was not made, and therefore the election may be declared nullity.

What did Kangana say about the Union Budget?

Kangana Ranaut came out all praise for the 2024 Union Budget, presented by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on July 5, saying she was “very happy”.

She said, “A relief fund has been promised for Himachal Pradesh. We are very pleased with the Budget.”.
