In a landmark moment for Pakistan, Dr. Helen Mary Roberts, a Christian woman, has been promoted to the rank of brigadier in the Pakistan Army. This significant achievement marks the first time in the country’s 77-year history that a Christian woman has attained such a prestigious rank. Dr. Roberts, a senior pathologist, has served in the Pakistan Army Medical Corps for over two decades, earning widespread respect and recognition for her dedication and expertise.

Dr. Roberts’ promotion comes at a time of heightened attacks on minorities in the country. Recently, the Christian community protested the lynching of a Christian factory owner in Punjab’s Sargodha district, where his residence was damaged and properties were set ablaze due to blasphemy speculations. In this tense environment, one X user commented that Roberts’ appointment was a step toward healing the wounds of the Christian community. “It’s not enough to heal their wounds, but it’s still comforting to see this news. More power to them and all the women,” the user wrote.

The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), Pakistan’s military media and public relations wing, lauded Dr. Roberts as a shining example of “merit and national representation.” The Associated Press of Pakistan reported that the ISPR emphasised her promotion as a testament to the Pakistan Army’s commitment to decisions made without regard to religious, linguistic, or gender discrimination. Roberts considers it an honour to serve her country and nation, reflecting the Army’s inclusive values.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif conveyed his heartfelt congratulations, emphasising the pride felt by the entire nation. “I myself and the nation congratulate Brig Helen Mary Roberts on getting the honour of the first female from a minority to be promoted as Brigadier in the Pakistan Army,” he stated. Sharif acknowledged her as a symbol of excellence and inspiration for thousands of dedicated women from similar backgrounds who serve the nation with distinction.

Other politicians, such as Pakistan People’s Party’s Sherry Rehman, also congratulated Dr. Roberts. Pakistani citizens on social media hailed her promotion as a significant step towards inclusion. Journalist Marvi Sirmed wrote on X, “This August Pakistan turns 77 years old. And its army gets its first female brigadier from Christian community now. Not too late. Perhaps. Congratulations Dr. Helen Mary Roberts. Hope you ladies get to the fighting corps and command them soon. Santé. L’chayim!”

Dr. Helen Mary Roberts has been widely applauded for breaking gender barriers within the Pakistan Army. Her journey as a senior pathologist and a dedicated officer has paved the way for future generations of women in the military. In June 2020, Major General Nigar Johar was celebrated for becoming the first female to be promoted to the rank of lieutenant general, and also served as the first female surgeon general of the Army.

The United Nations in Pakistan also congratulated Dr. Roberts for her achievements. “Congratulations to Helen Mary Roberts, who has just made history as the first-ever Christian and the first-ever woman from a religious minority to be promoted to the rank of Brigadier in the Pakistan Army. She serves in the Army Medical Corps,” the organization wrote on X.

Dr. Helen Mary Roberts’ promotion is a historic move in Pakistan’s military history. Her rise to the rank of brigadier is seen as a beacon of hope for the Christian community and a testament to the potential for inclusion and diversity within Pakistan’s armed forces. As the nation grapples with challenges related to minority rights and gender equality, Dr. Roberts stands as a powerful symbol of hope and progress.
