‘Squid Game’ season 2 is here! The popular Netflix series Squid Game that swept the world is here for round two as Netflix unveiled an official first look at the much anticipated series. The footage is part of a montage highlighting the streaming service’s 2024 releases. This included looks at upcoming movies and shows such as the long-awaited sequel to Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, the shortly-awaited sequel to Rebel Moon Part 2: The Scare giver, the new sci-fi series 3 Body Problem, and the upcoming seasons of returning shows like Emily in Paris, The Diplomat, Bridgerton, Cobra Kai, The Umbrella Academy, and various others.

What is ‘Squid Game’ Season 2 about?

In the short teaser, the main lead, Seong Gi-hun, played by the South Korean actor Lee Jung-jae, is seen at the airport, where a voice on the phone tells him that he will regret his decision. Gi-Hun, who appears angry but is determined, replies to the voice that he will find it no matter what it takes. Along with this teaser, Netflix also released several intriguing and colorful photos from the new season, mainly centered on the protagonist Seong Gi-hun but also featuring the recruiter played by the widely popular Train to Busan actor Gong Yoo and a new character played by Park Gyu-young.

In season 2, Gi-hun abandons his plane to travel to the United States after a mysterious call and embarks on a chase with a motive, as stated by Netflix. Creator Hwang Dong-hyuk previously said that the themes and story of the first season naturally extend to season 2 when writing it. He says that he just thought about what the protagonist would do next as he turned away from boarding the plane. The creator also added that Gi-hun has become a totally new person by the end and that season 2 will be about what the new Gi-hun is going to do and how things will unfold with his new persona.

Who are ‘Squid Game’ season 2’s cast members?

The iconic main lead, Seong Gi-hun, will continue to be played by Lee Jung-jae after winning an Emmy for the role in 2022, becoming the first Asian actor to win the lead actor award in a drama series. The various other returning characters include the detective okayed by actor Wi Ha-joon, the front man by Lee Byung-hun, and the recruiter played by Gong Yoo. The new cast members for season 2 include popular South Korean actors and actresses Yim Sei-wan, Kang Ha-neul, Park Sung-hoon, Jo Yu-ri, and Park Gyu-young. The new character played by Sweet Home star Park Gyu-young, based on the first look where her character is shown holding the phone card, will either become a player or also know something about the games. The creator, Hwang Dong-Hyuk, returns as the writer and director, as he previously won an Emmy for outstanding direction.

When is ‘Squid Game’ season 2 releasing?

The long-awaited season 2 of Squid Game does not have an official release date yet. But Netflix shared the first look as part of a larger preview of its 2024 film and television slate, confirming that the series will be released before the end of 2024. With the anticipation of the popular k-drama’s season 2, the original season 1 still ranks as the most watched series in Netflix history.
