BJP Vote Share Decline with Rajasthan 10% and UP 8.61%. In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) experienced significant shifts in its political landscape, marked by notable declines and gains across various states. The BJP’s overall seat tally fell from 303 in 2019 to 240, with the most substantial losses concentrated in the Hindi heartland states of Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Bihar, and Haryana, which together contributed to a net loss of 49 seats. This decline underscores a significant political shift in these regions.

In Uttar Pradesh, the BJP saw its most dramatic reduction, losing 29 seats and bringing its total down to 33 from 62 in 2019. The party’s vote share in the state also dropped by 8.61%, reflecting a considerable shift in voter sentiment. Rajasthan witnessed a similar trend, with the BJP losing 10 seats and experiencing a 10% decrease in vote share. In Bihar and Haryana, the party lost five seats each, further highlighting the challenges it faced in the Hindi heartland.

Other states where the BJP recorded losses include Maharashtra (14 seats), Karnataka (eight seats), West Bengal (six seats), and Jharkhand (three seats). Additionally, the party lost two seats in Punjab and one seat each in Gujarat, Jammu and Kashmir, Manipur, and Chandigarh. Despite these losses, the party retained its seats in Himachal Pradesh and Arunachal Pradesh,

though it saw significant declines in vote share in these states as well. In Himachal Pradesh, the vote share dropped by 13.27%, while in Arunachal Pradesh, it fell by 10%.

In Jammu and Kashmir, the BJP’s vote share nearly halved from 46.68% in 2019 to 24.36% in 2024, though it didn’t contest the three seats in Kashmir this time. A similar trend was observed in Manipur, where the party’s vote share dropped to 16.58% from 34.33% in 2019, resulting in the loss of both seats in the state.

Despite these setbacks, the BJP made notable gains in certain regions. The most significant improvement was seen in Odisha, where the party won 20 out of 21 seats, an increase of 12 seats from 2019. The party’s vote share in Odisha also rose to 45.34% from 38.88%. In the southern states, the BJP doubled its tally in Telangana, winning eight seats and increasing its vote share to 35% from 19.65%. In Andhra Pradesh, the party won three seats, where it had none in 2019, and its vote share increased to 11.28% from a mere 0.99%.

The BJP also retained both seats in Tripura with a 7.72% increase in vote share and increased its vote share in Punjab from 9.74% to 18.56%, although it did not win any seats there.

Contrastingly, the Congress party saw substantial gains in the 2024 elections, emerging as the largest party among the Opposition INDIA bloc members. The Congress increased its seat tally to 99 from 52 in 2019, gaining 50 new seats across 12 states while losing six seats across five states and one Union Territory. The party’s vote shares also improved, rising to 21.19% from 19.67% in 2019.

The Congress’s most significant gains were in Maharashtra, where it won 12 seats, and Karnataka, where it increased its tally by eight seats along with a 13.32% rise in vote share. In Rajasthan, the party gained eight seats, capitalizing on the BJP’s losses. In Haryana, Telangana, and Uttar Pradesh, the Congress increased its tally by five seats each. In UP, the Congress’s vote share rose from 6.36% to 9.46%, aided by an alliance with the Samajwadi Party. Telangana saw a considerable jump in Congress’s vote share to 40.1% from 29.79%.

Other gains for the Congress included two seats in Bihar and
one each in Tamil Nadu, Jharkhand, Nagaland, and Chandigarh. In Gujarat, the
Congress won one seat, breaking the BJP’s previous sweep. However, the Congress
faced notable declines in vote share in Punjab (14.28%), Puducherry (4.41%),
and Goa (3.84%).

In summary, the 2024 Lok Sabha elections highlighted
significant electoral shifts, with the BJP experiencing notable losses in its
traditional strongholds while making gains in new areas. Conversely, the
Congress made substantial inroads, particularly in states where the BJP
faltered, indicating a dynamic and evolving political landscape in India.
