The festival, which honours the goddess Bathukamma, has drawn large crowds, with people of all ages participating in various activities.
Hussain Sagar turned vibrant with Bathukamma songs, fireworks and laser show as the Telangana government held Saddula Bathukamma celebrations on Thursday (October 10, 2024) evening marking the final day of nine-day long festival of flowers. The celebrations began late in the evening.
The sky over Hussain Sagar was filled with fireworks of various hues. This was followed by fireworks and a laser show.
A Floral Extravaganza
The heart of Bathukamma lies in its exquisite floral arrangements. Women across the city gather to collect seasonal flowers, creating intricate Bathukamma designs that reflect their creativity and
devotion. These colourful creations, often layered and beautifully arranged, symbolize the goddess and are made from locally available flowers like marigold, sunflower, and chrysanthemum.
In neighbourhoods, parks, and community centres, groups of women come together, proudly
displaying their floral masterpieces. The air is filled with the sweet fragrance of flowers and the
sounds of laughter as they share stories, sing folk songs, and prepare for the festivities ahead. Local vendors also contribute to the atmosphere, selling flowers and traditional items needed for the celebrations.
Cultural Performances and Community Bonding
The Bathukamma festival is not just about flowers; it’s a celebration of culture and community.
Various cultural programs have been organized across the city, featuring folk dances, music
performances, and traditional games. Events like the “Bathukamma Dance” have become a highlight, where women dress in vibrant sarees and perform energetic dances around the Bathukamma, showcasing their skills and enthusiasm.
Local artists and cultural groups have taken the opportunity to perform traditional songs, further
enriching the festive atmosphere. These performances serve as a reminder of the region’s rich
artistic heritage and promote community bonding as people come together to enjoy the festivities.
The Grand Finale: Immersion of Bathukamma
As the festival reaches its culmination, the immersion of Bathukamma is a poignant event. On the
final day, women, adorned in their best attire, carry their Bathukamma to nearby lakes or rivers. This processional journey is filled with song and dance, as the participants celebrate the goddess one last time before bidding her farewell.
The immersion symbolizes the return of the goddess to her celestial abode, carrying with it the
hopes and prayers of the devotees. The sight of colourful Bathukamma being placed in the water,
surrounded by a sea of people singing and dancing, is a powerful reminder of the festival’s
significance.
Community and Spirituality: The Essence of Bathukamma
The Bathukamma festival is more than just a celebration; it is a manifestation of the region’s identity and values. It brings together people from diverse backgrounds, fostering a sense of belonging and community.
