Imtiaz Ali recently talked about how he was able to direct his first movie, Socha Na Tha, which had Abhay Deol and Ayesha Takia as the lead actors. He said that Sunny Deol contacted the filmmaker after learning that his cousin Abhay was thinking about working with Imtiaz on a movie.
The filmmaker further commented that it’s likely that the actor heard about Abhay Deol’s filmmaking plans. Sunny Deol called Imitiaz Ali and asked him what was happening and that only after his approval would the film get made. Moreover, many tried to frighten the Indian filmmaker before he had a chance to meet Sunny Deol.
Many said things like the actor is an action hero known for his angry young man roles and the filmmaker should tread with caution as the film script he was proposing involved the male protagonist getting slapped. People suggested to the filmmaker that Sunny Deol is a physically strong and fit man.
They even scared the filmmaker into thinking that if Sunny Deol got angry enough he could smack the filmmaker out of rage. Imtiaz had never encountered a famous actor in person before, but because he was eager to discuss the script of Socha Na Tha and make the film, he went to Shimla to tell Sunny Deol the story.
During the same chat, Imtiaz Ali also said that Sunny Deol told the filmmaker that their meeting could only take place late at night, early in the morning, or during rainy weather because the actor was shooting a movie in Shimla. Imtiaz took advantage of the downpour to his advantage and gave Sunny the script.
The actor declared after reading the script that he agreed to make it. Imtiaz said of how his perspective evolved, saying, that from his meeting, he found out that Sunny Deol is someone of a very shy and sensitive nature. He asked no questions regarding my experience or history. He’s important in my life because he made my very first movie for me.
