India Expected to Host Third ‘Voice of Global South Summit’ in August

India is expected to host the third edition of ‘Voice of Global South Summit’ around 17 August, 2024. The summit will be take place virtually with Indian PM Shri Narenda Modi as the chair. Ministerial level meetings are also expected to take place alongside.

The summit signals India’s commitment to fostering solidarity among nations and consolidating its leadership in the Global South.

Key Themes and Objectives

The themes on which the summit is expected to deliberately range from include economic cooperation, climate change, social equity and sustainable development. The main objective is to provide a common platform to the countries of Global South to share their perspective, priorities, and challenges in the ever-changing globalized world, and advocate for inclusive global policies.

India’s Role and Contributions

The inaugural summit, held in January 2023, had the theme “Unity of Voice, Unity of purpose” while the second summit, held in November 2023, was themed “Together, for Everyone’s Growth, Everyone’s Trust”. As the main organizer of the event every year, India has taken a lead role in its success. India is emerging as the leader of the Global South and is aiming to showcase its commitment to ‘south-south’ cooperation through the summit.

Voices of the Global South

The summit will provide a common platform for the perspectives and experiences of leaders and representatives from the Global South. Representatives of over 120 countries have participated in the summit in the past. These include countries from Asia, Latin America, and Caribbean. This will ensure that developing nations are represented and taken into account when it comes to decision made on global stage.

Outlook for the Future

There are expectations of continued cooperation and follow-up actions after the conclusion of the summit. Participating countries are expected to maintain momentum on the initiatives launched during the summit. Before the third ‘Voice of the Global South Summit’ which is expected to be held on 17 August, all eyes will be on how the countries can bring about the change that benefits global society and equality.
