It is expected that the virtual G20 summit will have deliberations on critical matters, specific results and the actions to be taken along with a comprehensive review of further developments. World leaders like Russian President Vladimir Putin, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, and Chinese Premier Li Qiang will attend the meeting.

G20 Virtual Leaders’ Summit
World leaders will meet once again for discussions under the Indian G20 presidency before Brazil takes over in the year 2024. The meeting will involve a comprehensive review of the subsequent developments during the Indian presidency. During the New Delhi Summit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that the G20 virtual leaders’ summit would take place before the conclusion of the Indian presidency. As per the Ministry of External Affairs, invitations have been sent to the leaders of the G20 member countries along with the newly inducted African Union as well as nine guest countries and chiefs of 11 international organizations.
The meeting is scheduled to be held under the able chairmanship of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. India’s G20 sherpa Amitabh Kant had mentioned that the core objective of the meeting would be the development of the member nations and the emerging geopolitical situation and its impact on the world.
According to Amitabh Kant, the meeting will deliberate on the implementation of the Leaders’ Declaration and will provide an opportunity for the leaders to share their views on current world affairs. It will enhance cooperation among the member nations and will address the gaps in global governance. It will strengthen the commitment towards the Sustainable Development Goals and will help to reinvigorate multilateral systems that will have a positive impact on people’s lives.
It is expected that Russian President Vladimir Putin and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will attend the event. Ottawa has confirmed Trudeau’s participation in the event in which he would virtually face Prime Minister Modi for the first time after his controversial allegation of the potential involvement of Indian agents in Hardeep Nijjar’s murder. This had strained India-Canada ties. Chinese Premier Li Qiang will attend the event in place of President Xi Jinping.
India holds the presidency of the Summit till 30th of November 2023. Thereafter, it will be a part of the G20 Troika during the Brazilian G20 presidency in 2024.
What is the G20 Summit?
The G20 or Group of 20 comprises 19 sovereign countries, the European Union and the African Union. It consists of the world’s largest economies. It was founded in 1999 in response to world economic crisis.
The 18th edition of the Summit was hosted by India in 2023 under the chairmanship of PM Narendra Modi. It was during this summit that the African Union was inducted making it the 21st member of the summit. It was also the first addition since 1999. PM Modi who is the current chairperson of the summit announced its inclusion.
The theme of the summit under the Indian presidency was “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam” which can be translated as “One Earth, One Family, One Future”. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had expressed that under India’s presidency, the summit tends to move towards a human-centric development approach addressing global issues like climate change and the regulation of cryptocurrencies.
