Indian student influx in the US
The number of international students from India has hit a new record in 2022-2023.
According to the latest Open Doors report, a total number of 2,68,923, up to 35%, Indian students study in the US. The number of graduates in the nation is 1,65,936, while undergraduates are at 31,954.
According to the Open Doors report, India has surpassed China to become the highest source of international graduate students in the US. Regardless of the visa struggles, the US remains the top priority for international students. China maintains the top position as the highest student-sending country, with 2,89,526 students, but has a negative growth rate.
The 2022-23 academic year saw a major hike in international students in the US. The growth ratio marked the single largest year rise in over 40 years. The Embassies and consulates of the US in India provided a record number of student visas. Eric Garcetti, the US Ambassador to India, praised the educational system of India and expressed interest in more US students studying in India and gender balance.
Graduate and undergraduate aspirants from India remain the highest priority of US institutions. Over 80% of the institutions prefer graduate students from India. A large section of Indian students opted for programs in technology, science, and business.
Marianne Craven, the acting deputy assistant secretary for the academic exchanges Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the US, reiterated the significance of the relationship between India and the US and expressed the desire to strengthen the ties and continue the student exchange and academic cooperation.
US the priority for International students
The top-quality education, faculties of high academic excellence, and the academic environment and exposure provided by universities in the US have made the nation a preferred destination for aspiring international students. The international student population in the US contributed nearly $38 billion to the economy, according to the US Department of Commerce.
Lee Satterfield, the Assistant US Secretary of State, said that international education promotes peace and cross-cultural relationships and provides the skills necessary to face shared challenges. The US looks forward to attracting more international students and acting as a global leader in international education.
The influx of students has helped the US recover from the loss of students they suffered during the pandemic. A total of 198,793 students pursued Optional Practical Training, supporting students to achieve practical work experiences after the completion of their academic studies.
OECD countries and Nigeria among the ranks
According to a report, students pursuing higher education in OECD (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development) countries during 2022 reached to more than 1.9 million. Over the past year, a record number of OECD international students took admission for education in the US. Excluding India and China, other countries sending the most students abroad include Germany, France, and Vietnam.
According to a report from Open Doors, Nigeria is the only African nation in the top ten student-sending nations. The number of Nigerian students in the US increased by 22.2% within one year despite the foreign exchange crisis. A total number of 17,640 students have enrolled for study in the academic year 2022-2023.
