Indian Army Introduces Vidyut Rakshak for Improved Generator Management. The Indian Army has unveiled a groundbreaking innovation called ‘Vidyut Rakshak,’ an integrated generator monitoring, protection, and control system. Developed by the Army Design Bureau (ADB), this Internet of Things (IoT)-enabled system was launched by the Army’s Vice Chief, Lt Gen Upendra Dwivedi.
The launch event underscored the Indian Army’s commitment to leveraging advanced technologies for operational efficiency and transformational change.‘Vidyut Rakshak’ marks a significant milestone in the Army’s tech-driven initiatives, aligning with its ‘Year of Tech Absorption.’
In his message, Army Chief Gen Manoj Pande lauded the ADB, emphasizing that this achievement highlights the Army’s dedication to using technology as a transformative catalyst. “The success of Vidyut Rakshak from ‘innovation to induction’ sets a precedent and signifies our commitment to harnessing technology for transformative change,” he stated.
As an IoT-enabled system, Vidyut Rakshak creates a network of interconnected devices that communicate and exchange data with other IoT devices and cloud systems. This innovation is applicable to all generators within the Indian Army, irrespective of their type, make, rating, or age. It not only monitors generator parameters but also predicts and prevents faults, automating many manual operations.
This automation is expected to save manpower and enhance operational efficiency through a user-friendly interface.Lt Gen Dwivedi praised the ADB’s efforts during the launch, which included the rollout of the first production units of Vidyut Rakshak. A live demonstration showcased the system’s capabilities, with Lt Gen Dwivedi remotely switching on generators located in Srinagar, Jammu & Kashmir, and monitoring their parameters .
Manifestation of Vidyut Rakshak
This demonstration highlighted the system’s ability to enhance remote operational control and monitoring. The development of Vidyut Rakshak is part of a broader strategy to integrate advanced technologies into military operations. Recently, during Aero India 2023, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the Indian Army and the Foundation for Innovation and Technology Transfer (FITT) at IIT Delhi for the production of innovations.
Vidyut Rakshak was the first innovation to be produced under this MoU. The transfer of technology (ToT) was officially concluded with a production agency during the ‘Indian Army Ideas and Innovation Competition’ held on December 5, 2023, in New Delhi, attended by Gen Manoj Pande.
In addition to Vidyut Rakshak, the Indian Army has secured a patent for another innovative device developed by Major Rajprasad, the ‘Portable Multi-Target Detonation Device.’ This device has already been inducted into the Indian Army, demonstrating the Army’s commitment to fostering an innovative spirit and enhancing its technological capabilities. Both innovations were displayed during the recent ‘Exercise Bharat Shakti,’ witnessed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, further highlighting their strategic importance.
Facets of Vidyut Rakshak
The introduction of Vidyut Rakshak represents a significant advancement in the Indian Army’s journey toward technological integration and operational excellence. This system not only enhances the monitoring and control of generators but also significantly contributes to fault prediction and prevention, ensuring greater reliability and efficiency in military operations.
The automation of manual tasks through a user-friendly interface will free up personnel for other critical tasks, optimizing resource allocation. The Army’s efforts to adopt cutting-edge technologies through initiatives like Vidyut Rakshak exemplify its proactive approach to modernizing its operational capabilities. By integrating IoT and other advanced technologies, the Army is poised to achieve greater operational readiness and support for its diverse missions.
The launch of Vidyut Rakshak sets a new standard for technological innovation within the Indian Army, promising enhanced efficiency and effectiveness in various operational scenarios.
Summation
Overall, Vidyut Rakshak’s induction into the Indian Army is a testament to the successful collaboration between military and academic institutions, showcasing how technological advancements can be harnessed to meet the strategic needs of the defense sector. This innovation paves the way for future advancements and sets a strong foundation for continued technological evolution within the Indian Army.
