Seven Indian films to shine at the Cannes Film Festival 2024.

All we Imagine as Light.

Payal Kapadia is the screenwriter and director of the upcoming 2024 film All We Imagine as Light. Kani Kusruti, Divya Prabha, Chhaya Kadam, and Hridhu Haroon appear in the lead roles.

Payal Kapadia directed and wrote the movie. It is produced by Thomas Hakim,Julien Graff, and Ranabir Das.

The film has been selected to compete for the Palme d’Or at the 77th Cannes Film Festival, where it will be shown on May 23, 2024.

Santosh

The film follows Santosh, a newly widowed police constable in Northern India’s rural badlands, as she takes over her husband’s job. When a girl’s body is discovered, she is brought into the investigation by charismatic feminist inspector Sharma.

Sandhya Suri is the director.Producers: Alan McAlex, Mike Goodridge, James Bowsher, and Balthazar de Ganay.

Sunflowers Were The First to Know.

“SUNFLOWERS WERE THE FIRST TO KNOW” tells the story of an elderly woman who steals the village’s rooster, causing chaos in the community. To resurrect the rooster, a prophecy is fulfilled, forcing the old lady’s family to flee.

The director and writer is Chidananda S Naik. The film features Vasudha Bharighat, Kushal BK, and Sanju Chavan.

Manthan ( restored version)

Manthan, also known as The Churning, is a 1976 Hindi film directed by Shyam Benegal that was inspired by Verghese Kurien’s pioneering milk cooperative movement. It was co-written by him and Vijay Tendulkar.[1] It is set against the backdrop of India’s White Revolution. Aside from being a huge measurable success, this project also demonstrated the power of “collective might” because it was entirely crowdfunded by 500,000 farmers who each donated Rs. 2.[2][3][4] Manthan is Indian cinema’s first crowdfunded film.

Sister Midnight.

In Mumbai, an arranged marriage devolved into chaos as the spineless husband watched his wife transform into a ruthless, feral force within their marital boundaries.

In Retreat.

Haf’s ongoing project “In Retreat” is a deeply personal one for debutante Syed Maisam Ali Shah.

Shah, a graduate of the prestigious Film and Television Institute of India (Ftii), made several internationally acclaimed short films before launching his fiction feature debut with “In Retreat.”

In the film, a man returns to his hometown after an extended absence and embarks on a one-night pilgrimage.

Shameless 

Renuka flees to a sex workers’ community in northern India after murdering a cop in a Delhi brothel. There, she begins a forbidden romance with Devika, who is 17 years old. Against all odds, they attempt to forge their way to freedom.

After fatally stabbing a police superintendent, Nadira flees a brothel in Delhi late at night. With the law on her heels, she seeks temporary refuge in a Northern Indian sex workers’ community, adopting the Hindu name Renuka. There, she meets Devika, a young girl whose religious tradition condemns her to a life of prostitution. Devika defies her tyrannical mother and the oppressive age-old system, joining Renuka on a perilous journey through a treacherous maze of violence and brutality, all in the hope of escaping the law and achieving their freedom.

what is Cannes Film Festival ?

Prior to 2003, the Cannes Film Festival was known as the Festival international du film, or International Film Festival. Every year, Cannes, France hosts this international film festival. New movies from all over the world, including documentaries, are previewed during the event. The invitation-only event was established in 1946 and takes place at the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès every year, usually in May.The festival gained official recognition from the FIAPF in 1951.

Cannes as seen from Le Suquet.Pierre Lescure, co-founder and former CEO of French pay-TV operator Canal+, became President of the Festival on July 1, 2014, with Thierry Frémaux serving as General Delegate. Gilles Jacob was named Honorary President of the Festival by the board of directors.

Together with the Venice Film Festival in Italy and the Berlin International Film Festival in Germany, it is one of the “Big Three” major European film festivals. It is also one of the “Big Five” major international film festivals, which also includes the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah, and the Toronto International Film Festival in Toronto, Canada.
