Indians at The Met Gala 2024: A Celebration of Fashion and Representation

The much-anticipated Met Gala 2024 began with celebrities arriving at the red carpet in their own version of ‘The Garden of Time.’ The show’s co-host Zendaya put a new twist on a Christian Dior classic while Kendall Jenner turned heads in a vintage Alexander McQueen dress from 1999. What makes it special this year though is that there were many Indians who featured prominently on fashion’s biggest night.

From Alia Bhatt to Ambika Mod, Indian celebrities made a splash at the Met Gala, showcasing their sartorial prowess and cultural heritage. Let’s take a closer look at the standout appearances:

Alia Bhatt : A Vision in Sabyasachi at Met Gala

Alia Bhatt mesmerized onlookers in a custom-designed mint green Sabyasachi saree with original stones and an impressive train extending twenty-three feet. A look styled by Anaita Shroff Adajania, Bhatt’s ensemble took inspiration from ‘Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion’. Her previous appearance at the Met Gala last year wore Prabal Gurung couture also won her accolades for being true to theme of the event.

Natasha Poonawalla: Channeling Margiela Chic

Natasha Poonawalla dazzled in a custom Margiela creation by John Galliano, complemented by sky-high platform Christian Louboutins. Her previous Met Gala ensemble in 2022, a striking Sabyasachi x Schiaparelli collaboration, epitomized ‘Gilded Glamour’ with its opulent design and intricate detailing.

Mona Patel: A Butterfly-Inspired Marvel

For her highly anticipated debut, Mona Patel wore an Iris van Herpen off-shoulder dress made with sculptural elements and 3D butterflies fluttering all over it. Inspired by ‘The Garden of Time,’ Patel’s outfit captured the dreams, wonders, and miracles of nature.

Mindy Kaling: Couture Elegance by Gaurav Gupta 

Mindy Kaling, who is both an actress and a producer, was in a Gaurav Gupta nude couture gown which was well fitted and completed with a majestic structured cape. In her previous Met Gala (2023) event she paid homage to Karl Lagerfeld wearing Simkhai couture pearl white dress which showcased her understanding of classic elegance.

Ambika Mod: Monochrome Chic

For her first time on the red carpet Ambika Mod looked stunning in a monochrome black-and-white gown from Loewe which oozed effortless glamour and chic.

Sudha Reddy: Regal Splendor in Tarun Tahiliani

Hyderabad-based billionaire Sudha Reddy does not pass unnoticed at any function that she attends wearing custom Tarun Tahiliani ivory silk dress adorned with precious stones from her own collection. During her last year’s Met Gala visit she wore Falguni Shane Peacock lavish outfit that confirmed her as one of the fashion icons around.

Isha Ambani: Embracing Indian Heritage

In a Rahul Mishra couture sari gown, Isha Ambani captured audiences with a beautiful long floral train made with delicate hand embroidery. In this dress, she didn’t just emphasise the Indian craftsmanship but also conveyed the theme of ‘The Garden of Time’ which was an embodiment of timeless grace.

Sabyasachi Mukherjee: Making History

Sabyasachi Mukherjee, the renowned designer became the first ever Indian designer on Met Gala’s red carpet. Swathed in a Resort 2024 collection embroidered cotton duster coat and covered in tourmalines, pearls, emeralds and diamonds; Mukherjee was elegance personified.

Alia Bhatt’s ‘Kaala Teeka’ Moment

Alia Bhatt’s decision to include ‘kaala teeka’ in her Met Gala ensemble led to widespread media attention as it represents protection from the evil eye (a common belief among Indians). As well as being paired with Alia Bhatt’s stunning Sabyasachi saree, ‘kaala teeka’ added some tradition and enigma to her look making it more than memorable on red carpet appearances.

As Alia Bhatt graced the Met Gala 2024 red carpet in a breathtaking mint floral Sabyasachi saree, her family couldn’t contain their pride and excitement. From her mother-in-law to her sister-in-law, and her own mother, the Bollywood star received an outpouring of love and support from her closest ones.

Neetu Kapoor’s Endearing Message

Alia’s mother-in-law, Neetu Kapoor, took to her Instagram stories to share her admiration for the actress. She reshared Alia’s post and added a caption expressing her pride, stating, “You are fabulous.”

Riddhima Kapoor Sahni’s Admiration

Ranbir Kapoor’s sister, Riddhima Kapoor Sahni, also joined in celebrating Alia’s stunning Met Gala look. She shared the picture on her Instagram with the caption “absolutely gorgeous,” highlighting her admiration for her brother’s partner.

Soni Razdan’s Overflowing Joy

Alia’s mother, Soni Razdan, couldn’t contain her excitement as she shared her daughter’s Met Gala moments on her Instagram stories. She posted a video of Alia’s interview at the event and captioned it, “My babygirl making everybody proud.” Soni also reshared Alia’s post and expressed her swooning admiration, stating, “I can’t stop swooning what to do.”

Not only was the Met Gala 2024 a fashion celebration, but it is also an evidence of diversity and imagination which fashion industry is known for. Being an Indian star on the red carpet meant embodying a rich blend of culture, tradition and innovation that has made them inspirational to global audience and historical in fashion archives.
