The Brazilian Foreign Minister is set to visit India. Many ‘illegal immigrants’ including Indians, are stranded on the beaches of Sao Paulo. The Indian government will be raising the issue.
Why Brazil?
The USA has been changing its immigration laws and citizenship policy, now requiring a longer, continuous stay and a dreadful application process. Both, Trump and Biden have been strict on immigration; for obvious reasons. According to the Pew Research Center, in 2021, Indians rank third in the list of undocumented immigrants. Since the legal way is uneasy, people have resorted to Brazil, Mexico, and nearby countries. The USA border patrol force has contained these ‘illegal immigrants’ and accommodated them in tents and unsanitary conditions on the borders.
Why do Indians migrate?
Despite having a booming economy with continuously developing infrastructure, people migrate. The prime reason is to escape social boundaries and economic restrictions. As per a report, Indians gain almost a 100% salary hike in the USA and do not return to their home country, even if offered more. A foreign country offers freedom from boundaries, stereotypes, and an opportunity for a fresh start, along with remote facilities, less stress, and cleaner air.
Indian borders and immigration
India has a huge population of illegal immigrants. Individuals or communities facing persecution or seeking escape often cross borders. They add to the state’s burden and evade responsibilities towards society and the economy of the host country. In the USA, fentanyl is brought from Mexico through illegal immigrants. In India, the authorities have arrested many Rohingyas involved in unlawful activities. Bangladesh’s scuffle, North East’s sensitivity and remoteness and spying from Pakistan are already on India’s plate.
‘Vasudevaya Kutumbakam’ was India’s motto for the G-20 summit, New Delhi. The world, indeed, is a family. However, no one is welcome in the country for a prolonged and unlawful stay.
NRC & CAA
The Government in 2019 rolled out the two policies, inviting scathing criticism and months-long protests in Shaheen Bagh.
While one side rejoiced, others cried of communalism and divide and rule policy. Under the Citizenship Amendment Act, applicants need to prove their origin country and date of entry in India. The National Register of Citizen will include an updated list of the lawful citizens. To curb the illegal immigration, and defend the nation of unwanted dangers, and ensure the citizens’ rightful ownership of their country’s resources, strict laws like the Citizenship Amendment Act are needed. India cannot afford to have thousands inhabiting its borders.
