CALL FOR GLOBAL RESTRUCTURING
India’s External Affairs Minister Dr. S Jaishankar, while delivering the speech on his first official visit to the 16th BRICS Summit in Kazan, Russia, built a strong case for reshaping the international order. It was no ordinary diplomatic speech, but a clarion call signaling that traditional power structures are going through seismic shifts.
THE EVOLVING WORLD ORDER
Speaking on the changing global scenario, Jaishankar claimed that BRICS itself symbolizes a dramatic shift in the balance of international relations. The minister outlined India’s initiatives, from Digital Public Infrastructure to numerous other international collaborations. He emphasized the role of India as a “First Responder” for most of these crises, whether natural disasters, health issues, or an economic one.
PEACE AND DIPLOMACY
Perhaps an essential part of the messages Jaishankar wanted to convey was that it must be confirmed that Prime Minister Modi’s views on this being not “an era of war” should drive the way of forward, strictly to the observation of international law, which has zero tolerance for terrorism.
MIDDLE EAST CRISIS
In this context, Jaishankar expressed deep concern about the ongoing intensification of conflict in West Asia, the Middle East. He further underlined that for an equitable and lasting settlement of the Palestine issue, India supports a two-state approach.
UN SECURITY COUNCIL HOPES
Throughout the speech, Jaishankar continued to keep India’s demand for a permanent seat on the UN Security Council. It wasn’t about prestige or trappings of power but part of the necessary reformation of global institutions in which India was ready to assume greater international responsibilities.
Going beyond merely another diplomatic oration in the run up, India’s full address at the BRICS Summit reflected her clear vision of a new world order that was more just and transparent in approach, built on concrete suggestions and a willingness to assume greater international responsibilities. This warrants saying for an India whose voice-on the hues of Jaishankar-becomes absolutely vital in evolving contours for future international relations, and one that shifts ever more toward controlling its destiny as it goes along.
