On Thursday, the Mumbai High Court demanded Netflix to cease the airing of the web series, Indrani Mukerjea, a primary suspect in the Sheena Bora murder investigation. The Mumbai High Court has urged Netflix to organize a special screening to analyze the highly-publicized Sheena Bora incident before releasing it on the online streaming platform.
The documentary series, named, ‘The Indrani Mukerjea Story: The Buried Truth’ dives into the disappearance of a 25-year-old woman, named Sheena Bora which was set to air on Netflix on the 23rd of February.
Netflix has agreed to the High Court’s request and promised not to stream the documentary show on Indrani Mukerjea before February 29.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) raised objections against the release of the documentary series stating that it might hinder the ongoing investigation, as well as the outcome and public’s perspective about the case.
A subsection of the court of Justices Revati Mohite Dere and Manjusha Deshpande requested the creators of the documentary series to organize a separate screening for CBI officers and adjourned the proceedings for next Thursday which is February, 29.
Declaring the release date of the web series, Netflix India took to Instagram last month and published a post captioning it as, “A sensational scandal that rocked the entire nation, with one family’s darkest secret at the centre of it all. The Indrani Mukerjea Story Buried Truth, coming on 23 February only on Netflix.”
About Sheena Bora Murder Case
A 24-year-old woman Sheena Bora who worked as an executive for Mumbai Metro One was purportedly suffocated and killed in a car on April 24, 2012, in Mumbai. Sheena Bora was the daughter of Indrani Mukerjea, a media professional, and Sidhhart Das, but she was brought up by her maternal grandparents, with Indrani serving as her sister.
Sheena Bora was Indrani’s daughter from her previous relationship. Sheena’s incinerated body was discovered in a forest in the nearby Raigad area.
The terrible incident eventually came to light in 2015 after Shyamvar Pinturam Rai, Indrani’s previous driver, surrendered to the police about his participation in Sheena Bora’s murder. Rai’s testimony resulted in the incarceration of Indrani Mukerjea, her former husband Sanjeev Khanna, and her then-husband Peter Mukerjea. A thorough investigation into this case exposed an intricate web of lies, deception, and familial relationships.
The brutal act was supposedly motivated by monetary as well as personal issues, including property and issues with relationships. The incident received tremendous publicity because of its remarkable nature, including important personalities, and claims of conspiracy.
The court proceedings continued for several years, with unforeseen events, involving efforts to alter the proofs and statements of innocence.
Indrani Mukerjea received parole from the Supreme Court in the month of May 2022, citing the fact that she had been detained for over six years and that the trial was unlikely to end soon. The Supreme Court additionally observed that the other suspect in the case, Peter Mukerjea, had previously been granted parole in February 2020. A panel of judges consisting of Justice L Nageswara Rao, BR Gaval, and AS Bopanna announced their decision in a request for special leave lodged against an order issued by the Mumbai High Court on the matter in November 2021.
