In an unexpected turn of events, Iran is set to hold a presidential election on June 28, 2024, following the sudden death of President Ibrahim Raisi. Raisi, who was elected in 2021, tragically died in a helicopter crash earlier this month, prompting the Iranian government to expedite the electoral process. This sudden development has sent shockwaves through the nation, triggering a period of national mourning and political uncertainty.

The political landscape in Iran has become increasingly volatile with Raisi’s untimely demise. The expedited election has intensified political activity, with various factions and candidates quickly mobilizing their campaigns.

Among the six candidates nominated for the presidency is Mohammad Ghalibaf, the current parliamentary speaker and former mayor of Tehran. Ghalibaf, known for his pragmatic approach and extensive political experience, is considered a strong contender in this accelerated race.

These six candidates will undergo a rigorous vetting process by the Guardian Council, a powerful body responsible for approving electoral candidates. Ultimately, the final selection of the presidential candidates will be made by Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

This process ensures that the candidates align with the core values and strategic interests of the Islamic Republic. While the president plays a role in influencing foreign policy, the Supreme Leader holds ultimate power over the country’s direction in both domestic and international arenas.

The upcoming election holds significant implications for both domestic and international politics. The next president will need to address pressing issues such as economic sanctions, inflation, and social unrest, while also managing Iran’s contentious relationships with global powers.

Although the president has some influence over foreign policy, it is Ayatollah Khamenei who ultimately controls the country’s strategic decisions, particularly regarding its nuclear program and regional influence. Thus, the outcome of this election is crucial for setting the tone of Iran’s future
