Jerry Seinfeld, who is finally making his directorial debut with his upcoming comedy film, “unfrosted,” backed by Netflix, recently commented in an interview that the movie business is over and the executives have no idea about it.
“It was totally new to me. I thought I had done some awesome stuff, but it was nothing like the way these people work, they’re so very serious! They don’t have any idea that the movie business is over, they have no idea,” Seinfeld said.
Asked to elaborate on a more sincere note, the comedian replied, “film doesn’t occupy the peak in the social, cultural hierarchy that it did for most of our lives. When a movie came out, if it was satissfactory, we all went to see it. We all discussed it. We quoted lines and scenes we liked. Now we are strolling through a fire hose of water, just trying to see.”
When he was asked whether anything had replaced film, “ depression? Malaise? I would say confusion. Disorientation replaced the movie business. Everyone I know in show business, everyday, is going, ‘what’s going on? How do you do this? What are we supposed to do now?’”

Seinfeld believes that the movie industry may be going downhill, but stand up is still something people enjoy and can depend upon, “ I have done enough stuff that I have my own thing, which is more valuable than it’s ever been.” he elaborated by saying, “stand-up is like you are a cabinetmaker, and everybody needs a guy who is good with wood. There are trees everywhere, but to make a nice table? it is not so easy. So, the metaphor is that if you have good craft and craftsmanship, you are kind of impervious to the whims of the industry.” He believes that audiences are now shifting to stand-up as it’s something one cant fake, people can trust it. Apart from stand-up everything seems to be fake.
The movie “unfrosted” talks about the origin of the pop tarts, but why did seinfeld agree to do this film out of the many? Because they wouldn’t put him in ‘Mad Men’. I love office comedies. I love stupid people in suits, and it was Covid. I had nothing to do. So, I got talked into it, it wasn’t my idea.”
He said how he kept getting dragged into things by the most amazing people and thus, couldn’t really refuse. “ These movie people are unbelievable. They are insane. We had a prop master, Trish Gallaher Glenn. She had a room which was filled with toys and bikes and clothes, everything from that era. Everyone gives their 150%. It is weird.”
