The resolution was approved during a one-day Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) convention that was presided over by Vikar Rasool Wani, the head of the J-K unit.
In a resolution approved here on Saturday, the Congress unit for Jammu and Kashmir called on former president Rahul Gandhi to assume the office of Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha.
Nearly all top officials and employees attended the Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) one-day convention, which was presided over by J-K unit president Vikar Rasool Wani, and the resolution was approved, according to a party spokeswoman.
Rahul Gandhi should become the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, it is essential. Citing the resolution, the spokesman stated, “This is the demand of general workers and the people of this country who desire a strong opposition to raise the issues faced by the common people.”
The convention also congratulated Sonia Gandhi on being elected as the chairperson of the Congress Parliamentary Party, praising her leadership and commitment to the party throughout her political career. This came first, following the recently concluded Lok Sabha elections, which saw the BJP retain both seats in the Jammu region for a third term.
The Congress also voiced grave concerns about the declining security situation in the Jammu region and requested that the government take decisive action against terrorism and establish a favorable environment for the September 30 Assembly elections, as mandated by the Supreme Court.
Wani criticised the J&K government and the Centre for ‘supposedly not being able to halt terrorism in the Union Territory’.
He said that the Modi government was “playing politics” by pretending that J&K was back to normal and “misleading” the country about the actual situation.
He requested that the administration establish a climate of safety and security and make arrangements that would allow assembly elections to be held by the date set by the Supreme Court. The leader of the Congress remarked that the party and the INDIA bloc did really well in the Lok Sabha elections, and he or she was grateful to the party workers for their hard work and commitment in reducing the margin of victory of the BJP in the seats of Jammu and Udhampur.
Two minutes of silence were observed at the start of the convention to remember the nine people who died in recent terror attacks—seven of them pilgrims returning from the Shiv Khori temple and a CRPF jawan—and to pray for the quick recovery of those who were hurt.
According to the spokesman, the conference also approved a resolution denouncing the most recent terror acts and the current state of security in J-K. The resolution demanded of Pakistan that it cease its vehement sponsorship of terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir and take decisive steps to eradicate the threat.
The resolution stated that the JKPCC strives to restore a climate of safety and security and stands in solidarity with the government and the gallant forces in addressing the current situation.
“We strongly urge the Central government and the UT administration to ensure incident-free Amarnath Yatra, scheduled to commence on June 29, at all costs,” said the spokesperson.
In a resolution on political matters and the future, the party called on the administration to establish a favorable environment so that the assembly elections may be held right away.
It said that in light of the worsening circumstances, the Election Commissioner and the government are encouraged to guarantee equal playing fields in the area of security for party leaders and well-known opposition party officials. For the assembly elections, the Congress is ready.
