Junior Doctors Write to President Murmu, Pm Modi While Protest Continues

4 Pages Letter Was Also Given to the Vice President and Union Health Minister

On 13 September 2024, 4 Pages Letter was sent to President Draupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi by Junior Doctors of Kolkata, Seeking Intervention Amid the Deadlock with Kolkata’s Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s Government.

The letter includes the issues medical professionals face while working at hospitals and the fact that there’s a ‘dearth of infrastructure and facilities’ That need to be looked after.

“We Humbly Place the Issues Before Your Esteemed Excellency, As the Head of State, So That Our Unfortunate Colleague Who Has Been the Victim of the Most Despicable Crime Shall Receive Justice, And So That We, The Healthcare Professionals Under the West Bengal Health Department, May Be Able to Discharge Our Duties to the Public Without Fear and Apprehension,” The Letter Read.

“Your Intervention in These Trying Times Will Act as a Beacon of Light to Us All, Showing Us the Way Ahead Out of the Darkness That Surrounds Us,” Letter Says.

“The Horrific Nature of the Crime, The Alleged Attempts to Cover It Up, And the Ensuing Climate of Fear Have Awakened the Nation, Demanding an Impartial Investigation and a Prompt, Fair, And Rational Trial,” The Doctors Wrote in The Letter.

“In This Troubling Atmosphere of Fear, Distrust, And Hopelessness, Junior Doctors in West Bengal Have Been Compelled to Avoid Working Within Hospital Premises and Have Adopted Alternative Ways to Fulfil Our Duty of Providing Healthcare Services to the Public,” The Letter Continued.

The Letter Also Highlights the Emotional Collective Sentiment of West Bengal, Who Demands Justice for The Deceased Doctor Through ‘Reclaim the Night’ Candle March on August 15.

The Protesting Doctor Also Accused the Bengal Police to Be A ‘mute Spectators’ While the Doctors Were Attacked by Thugs.

The Letter Came After Mamata Banerjee Offered Her Resignation from Chief Minister Post.

“I Am Ready to Resign from the Chief Minister of Bengal. I Am Not Concerned About the Post. I Want Justice for the Victim, I Am Only Concerned About the Ordinary People Getting Medical Services.” She Spoke.

Copies Of Letter Were Also Sent to Vice President Jagdeep Dhankar and Union Health Minister Jp Nadda.

The Incident

On August 9, A Trainee Doctor Was Found Raped and Murdered in RG Kar Hospital in Kolkata Which Led to a Massive Protest Across the Country. 

On 10 August, Kolkata Police Arrested Sanjay Roy, A Civic Police Volunteer as An Accused Person. But The Protests Continued to Date, Demanding More Transparency and Investigation Through CBI.

Calcutta High Court Transfer the Case to CBI Which Then Reveals some new Information About the Case.
