Director’s Vision & Future Prospects
A sequel to Kalki 2898 AD is currently being developed by Hyderabad-based production company Vyjayanthi Movies in response to the film’s success. The creators are sure that well-presented Indian mythological tales can compete with the richness and intricacy of superhero genres in the West.
While Kalki 2898 AD may not be a response to superhero films from Marvel or DC, Nag Ashwin said in a previous interview that it does offer the same degree of heroics and narrative depth. He thinks that telling these stories in a way that is appropriate for modern audiences—possibly even adding some sci-fi elements—has struck a chord with viewers. The story will be continued from a new angle in the already-in-development sequel.
Cast and story
The movie, which stars Amitabh Bachchan, Kamal Haasan, Prabhas, and Deepika Padukone, has done remarkably well at the box office, especially in light of other big-budget blockbusters’ recent poor showings. The narrative centers on Bachchan’s role, the immortal warrior Ashwathhama, who has to defend Lord Vishnu’s next avatar, Sumathi, played by Deepika Padukone, in the dystopian future city of Kashi (Varanasi). The enemy is played by Haasan’s Supreme Yaskin, and Prabhas plays the bounty hunter Bhairava.
