Kamala Harris, US Vice-President has announced that she has earned enough support to be the Democratic presidential nominee for the upcoming election. This came in two days after US President Joe Biden, who was seeking re-election earlier decided to withdraw from the presidential race.
Kamala Harris Earns Nomination
“When I launched my campaign for President, I said I wanted to earn this nomination. Tonight, I am proud to have achieved the threshold necessary to secure our party’s nomination, and as a daughter of California, I am proud that my home state’s delegation helped put our campaign over the top. I look forward to formally accepting the nomination soon,” Harris stated.

The 81-year-old Biden wrapped up his re-election campaign on Sunday and vowed to serve until his term expires in January 2025. Since then, he has endorsed 59-year-old Harris, who became the first Black American and the first Indian-American to be elected to the vice presidency. Harris was quoted in her statement thanking President Biden and the Democratic Party for their trust in her candidacy.
Harris showed how the upcoming election was paramount in significance, contrasting what she embodies with what her likely opponent—Donald Trump—did. “I fully intend to unite our party, unite our nation and defeat Donald Trump in November,” she said.
Delegates Favor Harris
An unofficial count of delegates for the Associated Press indicated she had more than 2,500 delegates – significantly more than the 1,976 required to win the nomination going into the vote. The Democratic Party is reportedly going to declare its presidential nominee by August 7. Harris became the presumptive nominee less than 36 hours after an endorsement from Biden, amid weeks of party acrimony and internal polls that show his support collapsing in a potential rematch against Trump.
In an X post, Harris expressed her pride in earning the necessary support to become the Democratic nominee. “Tonight, I am proud to have earned the support needed to become our party’s nominee. Over the next few months, I’ll be traveling across the country talking to Americans about everything on the line. I fully intend to unite our party and our nation, and defeat Donald Trump,” she stated.

With Harris poised to make the move from vice president to presidential candidate, there has been much speculation about her possible running mate. There are supposedly top Democrats in contention for the vice-presidential ticket, such as Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, US Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg, North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper, Senator Mark Kelly of Arizona, Attorney General Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania, JB Pritzker of Illinois, and Gretchen Whitmer of Michigan.
Campaign in Wisconsin
Harris will head to Wisconsin for the first time as a presidential candidate on Tuesday, a key battleground state in which the visit provides an opportunity for a reset of the Democrats’ presidential campaign and for her to make her case to voters as the most electable Democrat to challenge Trump. Harris is scheduled for remarks in Milwaukee at a political event
Harris intends to borrow heavily from her solid experience as a prosecutor, touting past work pursuing “predators” and “fraudsters” as San Francisco district attorney and California attorney general, for her speech.
With the Democratic Party now largely rallying behind Kamala Harris, the next couple of months will be the most instrumental time of the campaign, understanding which way it is headed and thus, in turn, where the future leadership of the United States is going to be headed. Harris’s historic candidacy represented a significant moment in American politics, and her journey to secure the presidency assures a keen watching by the nation and the world.
