The political-biopic depicts the darkest saga of the Indian Constitution, The Emergency (1975-77), imposed by ex-PM Indira Gandhi. The film announcement received serious criticism from Congress. Kangana, a subject to controversies, also revealed that the film is affirmed by the emergency surviving historians including Indira Gandhi’s friends and acquaintances and those in her opposition leading up to the accuracy of facts shown in the film.

Adding into her discography, Ranaut has directed the movie as well alongside role play of the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

Taking up the role of prominent figures involved in the emergency; actor Anupam Kher portrays Jayaprakash Narayan, Milind Soman plays Field Marshal Sam Bahadur’s role, Vishak Nair took the role of Sanjay Gandhi and Shreyas Talpade depicts Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s role. The political biopic not only shows the evident facts but the hidden aspects and severe consequences of the 21 month long prohibition. Kangana Ranaut describes the movie as more than just a historic chronology. Additionally she says the film deals with a deeper exploration of greed of power and underestimating its tragic consequences. Portraying Indira Gandhi’s role in the film, she describes her life not less than a “Shakespearean tragedy”.

The film details the pre-emergency incidents following during emergency and post-emergency consequences. It also involves the tragic public assassination of Indira Gandhi in1984, Sanjay Gandhi in 1980 and Rajiv Gandhi in 1991. Indira Gandhi took charge as the Prime Minister in 1966 after the sudden and tragic death of Shri Lal Bahadur shashtri. Facing various ups and downs in her political career, Indira’s life met a tragic end.

Apparently without bearing any official position in government, Sanjay Gandhi wields strong influence in policy making. Known for his aggressive political style and regarded as chief architect of various arbitrary policies imposed and overshadowed during emergency, Sanjay Gandhi was an influential figure. However, his short yet remarkable political life was cut short in a tragic plane crash in 1980. Later Rajiv Gandhi created interest in politics and took over her mother’s position as Prime Minister continuing the legacy and oppression of Congress in the Nation. Despite credited of liberating Indian economy Rajiv Gandhi face immense criticism and was also assassinated publicly by suicide bomber in 1991.

Zee Studios is incharge of distribution of the film ‘Emergency’, co-produced by Kangana Ranaut alongwith Renu Pitti. After remarkable performances of politically historic movies such as Kashmir Files and Tashkent Files, people await “The Emergency” eagerly.
