In a recent interview with News 24, actor-turned-politician Kangana Ranaut sparked controversy with her remarks about Congress leader and Leader of Opposition, Rahul Gandhi. Speaking with journalist Manak Gupta, Kangana questioned the credentials that led to Rahul Gandhi attaining his position, asking pointedly, “On what basis did Rahul Gandhi get this upalabdhi (achievement)?”
Actor-MP Questions Rahul Gandhi’s Credentials as Leader of Opposition
Kangana’s query continued as she challenged the legitimacy of his role: “Opposition leader karne ke liye unhone kya teer mara hai (What has he done to become opposition leader)? Can you tell me?” When the journalist responded by mentioning that Gandhi secured 99 seats, Kangana dismissively replied, “Theek hai agar aapko aise baat karni hai toh phir uska koi jawab ho hi nahi sakta (If you want to talk like this then there can be no answer to it).”
She further questioned why no senior leaders within the Congress Party had been considered for the position, hinting at potential dissatisfaction within the party.
Public Reaction and Criticism
A clip of the interview quickly made its way to social media, where netizens did not hold back in their criticism of Kangana. A user on X (formerly Twitter) shared the video with the caption, “Most hilarious thing I have seen.” The backlash was swift, with one comment reading, “Elect a clown, expect a circus.” Another user retorted, “The journalist could have asked her on what basis u got BJP ticket and people of Mandi elected you. What did you do to get the ticket?”
Critics also took aim at her acting career, with one tweet sarcastically suggesting, “@EktaaRKapoor @anuragkashyap72 @RajkumarHirani @TSeries Guys, can you take her back to Bollywood- Parliament or Country are not an appropriate platform for her to act and spread Cringe.”
Another user highlighted what they saw as a disconnect between Kangana’s reel and real-life personas, saying, “Poor girl does not have directors and scriptwriters in real life like reel life whose words she only had to enact in movies!! It’s real exposure!!” Many others mocked her, pointing out that her comments could harm her upcoming film’s prospects, with one user saying, “Such a beautiful opportunity lost.”
Upcoming Project
Amid the controversy, Kangana is gearing up for the release of her directorial project, Emergency. The film, which she also stars in, portrays the period of the Emergency in India in 1975, with Kangana taking on the role of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. The film features a strong cast, including Anupam Kher, Mahima Chaudhary, Milind Soman, Shreyas Talpade, Vishak Nair, and the late Satish Kaushik.
Despite the backlash, Kangana remains in the spotlight as both a political figure and an actor, with her remarks continuing to spark debate across social media platforms.
