Kerala CM in the Lok Sabha, Congressman Kodikunnil Suresh has served eight terms as an MP, compared to BJP member Bhartruhari Mahtab’s meagre seven.
The Chief Minister of Kerala, Pinarayi Vijayan, attacked the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) on Friday, accusing it of flouting parliamentary procedures by neglecting to choose Congressman Kodikunnil Suresh as the interim Speaker of the Lok Sabha. The opposition fell short of this need.
Suresh is the most senior MP in the Lok Sabha, having served eight terms, and is traditionally expected to serve as the pro-tem speaker.
In addition, CM Vijayan questioned why the BJP hasn’t addressed people who believe that Sangh Parivar’s “upper caste politics” prevented Suresh from being taken into consideration, according to PTI.
According to the Election Commission of India, Suresh was victorious from the Mavelikkara reserved seat in Kerala, defeating CPI candidate Arun Kumar CA by a margin of 10,868 votes.
In addition, Vijayan asked for an explanation of why the custom was broken in this case after BJP leader Bhartruhari Mahtab was named the acting Speaker of the Lok Sabha.
On Thursday, Mahtab, a seven-term member of parliament, was named pro-tem Speaker.
Arrogantly, Vijayan said that the BJP was not adhering to “parliamentary democratic principles and past conventions.”
Vijayan also questioned the ruling party’s reasoning for preventing a member of the opposition from assuming the office of Deputy Speaker of the Lok Sabha for a full five years.
According to PTI, Vijayan said that the BJP leadership’s arrogant demeanor poses a threat and an insult to Indian democracy.
The Lok Sabha sessions will be led by the pro-tem Speaker till the Speaker is selected in an election scheduled for June 26. The newly elected members of the 18th Lok Sabha will take an oath from the pro-tem Speaker on June 24–25, according to PTI.

The Center’s appointment of a pro-tem Speaker of the Lok Sabha, which avoided tradition by not choosing the senior-most MP, Kodikunnil Suresh, drew criticism from Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. Pinarayi Vijayan, the chief minister of Kerala, blasted the Center on Friday, accusing them of violating legislative customs by appointing a pro-tem speaker of the Lok Sabha instead of Kodikunnil Suresh, the seniormost member of the Congress.
Criticizing the Center’s choice, Vijayan asked, as per tradition, an explanation from the union government as to why Suresh was not chosen. The Chief Minister questioned whether the Sangh Parivar’s “upper caste politics” had any bearing on Suresh’s exclusion in a statement released by his office.
Following the appointment of seven-term member of parliament and BJP leader Bhartruhari Mahtab as pro-tem Speaker, Vijayan expressed his opinions. Vijayan charged the BJP of being haughty and of going against Lower House customs and parliamentary democratic ideals. He emphasized that the BJP’s reluctance to consider an opposition candidate left the deputy speaker seat empty for the entirety of the last Lok Sabha, calling this behavior an insult to Indian democracy.
