The Calcutta High Court is scheduled to examine at least three petitions seeking a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry into the abominable rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata. The case will be heard today in the court.
The case will be reviewed by a division bench led by Chief Justice TS Sivagnamam and including Justice Hiranmay Bhattacharya.
One of the petitioner’s legal advisors, Phiroze Edulji, claimed that the police were conducting a flawed investigation into the incident and suggested that a cover-up attempt was underway according to the report by PTI.
The lawyer further criticized the public disclosure of the victim’s name and requested that the court order its removal from all social media platforms.
Horrific Revelations of Autopsy
The reports unveiled that the accused assaulted her when she attempted to resist and defend herself, leading to her rape and murder.
According to the autopsy findings, cut marks were discovered on the victim’s hands and face, The reports indicated that a severe impact caused shards of glass from her spectacles to break and penetrate her eyes.
Additionally, head injuries were noted, as the accused had forcefully slammed the victim’s head against the wall.
While forcefully slamming her head against the wall, the accused allegedly pressed down on her mouth, causing injury marks on the victim’s face.
The torture took the worst form of cruelty, as the accused subsequently strangled the trainee doctor to death.
According to multiple reports, doctors also discovered numerous injury marks on her private parts, strongly indicating rape.
Meanwhile, cuts were found on the accused’s hand and face, indicating that the victim made an effort to fight back in an attempt to defend herself.
Victim’s Final Hours: Olympic Viewing, Late-Night Dinner
According to the reports by Bengali daily Anandabazaar Patrika revealed that the victim had watched Neeraj Chopra’s javelin throw during the Paris Olympics before having dinner at 2;30 a.m. with four of her colleagues.
Media reports have also indicated that the victim spoke with her mother at 11:00 p.m. that she had ordered food online. After eating she went to the seminar hall wrapped herself in a red blanket and slept on a blue carpet. It was there that the accused is believed to have attacked her while she was asleep.
The police have taken statements from 7 junior doctors, including the four who dined with the victim last night.
The Assistant Superintendent, who was the first to inform the family about the incident had been summoned for tomorrow.
Additionally, the head of the Chest department has also been called in.
Nationwide Strike Follows Kolkata Tragedy
The Federation of Resident Doctors’ Association (FORDA) announced a nationwide halt to hospital elective services yesterday. In a letter addressed to Union Health Minister JP Nadda, FORDA called the incident perhaps the ‘greatest travesty’ in the history of the resident doctor community.
They have demanded the resignation of all responsible authorities who failed to protect the dignity and life of a female on-duty doctor.
FORDA seeks assurance that the protesting doctors will not be mistreated and that prompt acting will be taken in the case.
The protest has significantly impacted the treatment at many hospitals in Kolkata, with doctors joining the demonstration to demand justice.
In Mumbai, doctors from major hospitals, including JJ Hospital, Sion Hospital, and King Edward Memorial Hospital, joined the protest.
At AIIMS Delhi, the number of daily surgeries has dropped by 80 percent and admissions are down by 35 percent following the doctors’ indefinite strike over the Kolkata incident, according to PTI.
The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has sent a letter to Health Minister Nadda urging the implementation of a central law to prevent attacks and violence against doctors and to designate hospitals as safe zones.
Mamata Sets Deadline for CBI Probe
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced on Monday that, if the police do not resolve the case by Sunday, August 18, she will refer it to the CBI. She added, however, that the central probe agency’s success rate is quite low.
