The perpetrator in the alleged murder and sexual assault of a woman trainee doctor at a government hospital in Kolkata has confessed to the crime, according to Kolkata Police sources.
The accused, Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer has confessed to the crime, according to sources in Kolkata Police, The police investigation uncovered significant evidence including a pornographic video found on Roy’s smartphone and an earphone that played a crucial role in solving a case.

CCTV Footage Reveals Key Clue
According to CCTV footage, Sanjay was seen wearing it when he entered the hospital, but it was missing when he left. The police eventually located the earphones, and analyzing them played a crucial role in solving the case, according to sources who spoke to News18.
Though officially known as civic volunteers, many still call them “ civic police”, a group initially established in Bengal to assist the police and tied to a powerful police welfare board. As a civic volunteer, Roy had easy access to the hospital. He was spotted entering around 4 am and CCTV footage captured him questioning the police.
Accused Remanded In Police Custody
The accused was apprehended on Saturday and placed in 14-day custody. He has been charged under section 64 (rape) and section 103 ( murder ) of Bhartiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS) and was brought before the Sealdah court, which remanded him to police custody until August 23.
Governor Urges Immediate Action
In a post on X, Raj Bhavan stated that Governor CV Ananda Bose has urged the state government to take immediate action and provide a report on the matter.
What is revealed in the autopsy?
The initial autopsy of the postgraduate trainee revealed that she was murdered after being assaulted sexually. The report revealed bleeding from her private areas and injuries to multiple parts of her body, including her eyes, mouth, and face.
Additionally, injuries were found near her abdomen, left leg, neck, righthand, ring finger, and lips. The trainee’s neck was also found broken,
The autopsy, carried out last week, ascertained that the crime occurred between 3 and 6 a.m. A senior police official told PTI that she was strangled and then suffocated to death.
CM Backs Death Penalty, Urges Action
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamta Banerjee has committed to pursue the death penalty for the perpetrator of the crime.
Banerjee, who has consistently opposed BJP calls for a central agency investigation into various corruption cases in Bengal, stated that her government would not resist a CBI probe if requested by the student’s and victim’s family. She further emphasized that if there is a lack of trust in the West Bengal government, they are free to approach any other investigating agency.
She has also directed officials to fast-track the trials by moving to a special court. Banerjee supported the protests and demands of junior doctors for severe punishment for the accused and increased safety at hospitals while urging them to continue providing medical care.
The Chief Minister, who also handles the Home and Health portfolios, announced the establishment of police camps at all hospitals to prevent further attacks on doctors.
She stressed that hospital superintendents and principals are accountable for internal security and assured that any neglect in their duties would be thoroughly investigated.
Political Divide Intensifies Over Case
The murder case has turned into a political dispute, with the TMC urging the Centre to ensure rapid justice in rape and murder cases within 7 days. Conversely, the BJP is demanding a CBI investigation
TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee asserted that individuals accused of such grave crimes should face either the death penalty or an encounter, as they have no place in society.
He proposed that the Centre should introduce an ordinance for immediate action against such offenders, with the possibility of making it a permanent law after six months.
Banerjee also recommended that the Bengal BJP should advocate for a law to guarantee swift justice in rape and murder cases within seven days.
In response, the BJP has called for a CBI inquiry into the case. Union Minister of State and BJP state president Sukanta Majumdar noted that the victim’s injuries indicated the likely involvement of several individuals.
He criticized the arrest as merely a superficial measure and argued that only a CBI investigation could reveal the full truth and ensure justice for the victim, who was on the brink of a successful future.
Majumdar also reproached the police for their slow response, implying that the case was initially mishandled as a suicide and only properly addressed after intervention by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
Doctors and Students Stage Protests
Following the incident, junior doctors and students from various state-run hospitals, such as RG Kar Medical College, National Medical College, and Medical College, Kolkata, arranged protest sit-ins and marches.
Similarly, rallies were conducted at district hospitals of Kolkata, including Bardhaman Medical College and Bankura Sammilani Medical College.
IMA Sets Deadline for Investigation
On Saturday, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) issued a 48-hour deadline to authorities to finalize the investigation into the rape and murder of a doctor at a state-run medical college and hospital in Kolkata. They warned that if the perpetrators are not apprehended within this timeframe, nationwide protests will follow.
The IMA called for a fair and prompt investigation and demanded a comprehensive review of the factors that allowed the crime to happen.
They have also urged for immediate actions to enhance the safety of doctors, particularly focusing on women in the workplace.
