On Saturday, May 25th, the sixth phase of the Lok Sabha Elections 2024 is set to take place. People will vote in 58 different areas across six states and two Union Territories.
On Saturday morning, Prime Minister Narendra Modi voiced his optimism. Speaking on the X platform (formerly known as Twitter) in hindi, he requested all the voters of the sixth phase of the Lok Sabha elections to come forward to vote in maximum numbers. He emphasized that every vote matters and every vote is equally important. The Prime Minister highlighted that democracy flourishes and looks vibrant only when the public participates enthusiastically in the election process. Alongside mothers, sisters, and daughters, he especially urged the young voters to exercise their right to vote.
According to the Election Commission of India, voting is scheduled to commence at 7 am and conclude at 6 pm.
Voting is scheduled in several states across India. In Bihar, there are 8 seats up for grabs, while Haryana will be voting for all 10 seats. Jammu and Kashmir have one seat in the mix, and Jharkhand has 4 seats up for grabs. Delhi is all set to vote for its 7 seats, and Odisha has 6 seats on the ballot. Uttar Pradesh is a big player with 14 seats up for grabs, while West Bengal has 8 seats in the contest. Additionally, 42 assembly constituencies in Odisha will also be heading to the polls.
In the sixth phase of the Lok Sabha elections, notable constituencies include New Delhi, North-East Delhi, North-West Delhi, and Chandni Chowk in Delhi; Sultanpur and Azamgarh in Uttar Pradesh; Anantnag-Rajouri in Jammu and Kashmir; Tamluk and Medinipur in West Bengal; Karnal, Kurukshetra, Gurgaon, and Rohtak in Haryana; and Bhubaneswar, Puri, and Sambalpur in Odisha.
Some notable candidates contesting in today’s elections include Dharmendra Pradhan contesting from Sambalpur, Rao Inderjit Singh from Gurugram, and Krishan Pal Gurjar from Faridabad. From the BJP, notable names include Maneka Gandhi contesting from Sultanpur, Sambit Patra from Puri, Manohar Lal Khattar from Karnal, Manoj Tiwari from North East Delhi, Abhijit Gangopadhyay from Tamluk, and Bansuri Swaraj from New Delhi. PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti is contesting from Anantnag-Rajouri, while Deepender Singh Hooda is representing Rohtak. Additionally, Raj Babbar is contesting from Gurugram, and Kanhaiya Kumar from the Congress is contesting from North East Delhi.
As of 11 am in the sixth phase of Lok Sabha polls, the voter turnout reached 25.76%. According to initial figures released by the Election Commission (EC), West Bengal saw the highest turnout at 16.54%, while Odisha had the lowest at 7.43% in the first two hours of polling. Uttar Pradesh recorded a turnout of 12.33%, Jharkhand 11.74%, Bihar 9.66%, Jammu and Kashmir 8.89%, Delhi 8.94%, and Haryana 8.31%, as reported by the EC’s Voter Turnout App.
In the elections’ fifth phase, which took place on May 20, there was a voter participation of 62.2% covering 49 seats. The Election Commission noted a turnout of 69.16% in the fourth phase. In the third phase of the Lok Sabha elections, voter turnout stood at 65.68%, while the second phase of the 2024 elections saw a turnout of 66.71%.
The Election Commission stated that over 11.13 crore voters, comprising 5.84 crore males, 5.29 crore females, and 5,120 third gender individuals, are eligible to cast their votes.
The upcoming and final phase of the election is scheduled for June 1. The counting of votes is set to take place on June 4.
