Lok Sabha Election 2024: Sandeshkhali Couldn’t Last in front of TMC; Proves Exit Polls Wrong

1

Kolkata, 3rd June: The general election result is coming to an end and 4th June will be remembered in India’s election history for a long time. The Lok Sabha Election 2024 was a yardstick to decide West Bengal’s power dynamic. Many issues were taken up, and the political ground heated. TMC was facing step-by-step backlashes but Bengal demonstrated the win of the constitution and democracy.

This Lok Sabha election wasn’t easy for other opposition parties too. Amid the rhetoric of “ab ki bar 400 par”, every political party, mainstream media, social media, and exit poll set their mind to see the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) win by a large margin. But the equation wasn’t as per popular people’s mind. BJP is struggling even to cross three hundred. I.N.D.I.A alliance has set its precedent that nothing is impossible if might is strong and confident.

Lok Sabha Election and Sandeshkhali

BJP’s hope to make its strongest political statement from the Sandeshkhali-inclusive Basirhat Lok Sabha constituency looked to have been dashed to the ground as its candidate Rekha Patra was outsmarted by TMC veteran Haji Nurul Islam who was leading with a margin of nearly two lakh votes. The alleged incidents of sexual atrocities on the local women, and land-grab in Sandeshkhali, one of the seven assembly segments of Basirhat, seem to have failed to deliver the BJP the coveted win from the seat.

For the voters at large of the Basirhat constituency, having one of West Bengal’s most porous stretches of international border with Bangladesh, the issues of Sandeshkhali were “very local” and did not appeal to them, poll experts felt. A jubilant Haji Nurul, who was nominated by the TMC instead of sitting MP-actor Nusrat Jahan, attributed his seemingly assured victory to a win of party supremo Mamata Banerjee.

TMC Situation In Sandeshkhali

“I was confident of a win. Whatever was spoken about Sandeshkhali was a lie and people never believed them. The videotapes proved that BJP’s hand was behind it… It was a dirty conspiracy by the BJP and people gave them a befitting reply,” he told PTI. “It’s the magic of Mamata Banerjee, and people have full trust in her…It was not that easy to defeat her only by conspiring, one needed to do some good work,” he added.

In West Bengal’s Basirhat it was reported that an alleged clash broke out between Trinamool Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party workers in Bayarbari during the seventh phase of Lok Sabha election 2024. When police reached Agarhati village to arrest a local BJP leader Sadhan Nandi alleged for Saturday’s violence, the local women in this village were involved in a scuffle with the Rapid Action Force (RAF) personnel, blocked roads, and fell tree trunks.

According to sources in the Election Commission of India, TMC fared better than the BJP in almost every Basirhat parliamentary seat assembly constituency, including Sandeshkhali.

What Exit Poll Projected?

Exit polls predict a sweeping victory for the BJP in West Bengal, driven by their aggressive campaign against Mamata Banerjee. According to TOI, two exit polls, Matrize and Jan Ki Baat, have given the BJP 21-25 and 21-26 seats, respectively. The NDTV-Jan Ki Baat exit poll forecasts 16-18 seats for Mamata Banerjee’s party in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

According to the Hindustan Times, India News-D-Dynamics projects 21 seats for the BJP and 19 for the Trinamool Congress. Meanwhile, Republic Bharat-Matrize predicts 21 to 25 seats for the BJP and 16 to 20 seats for Mamata Banerjee’s party in the state. Multiple incidents of violence and attempts to manipulate the polls were reported in West Bengal during the voting days.

But the Lok Sabha Election result shocked Bjp and TMC rocked Didi’s magic. Even before the poll bugle was sounded, Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee had asserted she alone would be enough to stop the BJP juggernaut in Bengal. On Tuesday, Didi seems to be well on her way to proving it. When famous political analyst Prashant Kishore predicted that BJP would be number one in West Bengal, TMC didn’t lose hope.

TMC Result in West Bengal

The trends released by the Election Commission show Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress (TMC) leading 29 seats. Meanwhile, the BJP was seen leading 12 seats, and the Congress one seat, around 4:30 p.m. The TMC and the Congress are part of the Opposition’s INDIA bloc but decided to contest the Lok Sabha Polls separately in West Bengal.

There are 42 Lok Sabha seats in West Bengal. In the 2019 Lok Sabha Election, the BJP won 18 seats, while the TMC won 22. If the trends prove right, it will come as a fall for Prashant Kishor and many other poll pundits who had predicted a huge win for the BJP in West Bengal.

All eyes are on the Lok Sabha Elections Results 2024, set to be declared by Tuesday evening. The Election Commission’s trend shows a close contest between the Bharatiya Janata Party-led NDA and the Opposition’s INDIA bloc. By 4 pm on Tuesday, the BJP won eight seats and led on 234 seats. The Congress, meanwhile, won four seats and was leading on 95 Lok Sabha seats.
