Production and Actors’ Details

‘Maharaj’ is directed by Siddharth P Malhotra and produced by Aditya Chopra under YRF Entertainment. The film features Junaid Khan, Jaideep Ahlawat, Shalini Pandey, and Sharvari. Today, on May 29, Netflix posted the first look poster on their social media, showcasing Jaideep Ahlawat and Junaid Khan.

The caption on the post by Netflix describes about the movie as the battle for the truth between a powerful man and a fearless journalist, based on true events. Netflix and Yash Raj Films are depicting the brave actions of Karsandas Mulji in ‘Maharaj’.

Storyline of The Movie

The story is set in 1862, a time when India had only three universities. The movie is about a significant legal battle from over 160 years ago. ‘Maharaj’ is inspired by the Maharaj Libel Case of 1862, where a religious leader took legal action against a newspaper company. Mulji, a journalist and social reformer, fought for women’s rights and social change. He studied at Elphinstone College in Mumbai and learned from Dadabhai Naoroji.

This historical drama celebrates humanity’s drive to do good, seek truth no matter what, and fight for what is right. It highlights how one person’s determination to make a positive change can overcome evil and hold those in power accountable. Netflix talks about the history in “Maharaj,” focusing on Karsandas Mulji, a journalist and social reformer supporting women’s rights and social changes. Mulji wrote about widow remarriage and stood up for the oppressed, starting the movement for societal change.

Relevance with The 1862 Maharaj Libel Case

The 1862 Maharaj Libel Case, which is central to the movie, began with accusations of wrongdoing against a well-known figure. This case turned into a significant legal battle, attracting a lot of attention and scrutiny, becoming one of the most important legal conflicts of its time. Netflix’s depiction of this historical event aims to show the bravery and determination of those who fought for truth and justice back then.
