Malayalam Actor Siddique Steps Down as AMMA’s General Secretary Following Rape Allegations

On August 25, a day after being accused of rape, Siddique, a senior Malayalam actor, informed the public that he has resigned as the general secretary of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artistes (AMMA). The allegations were put forward by actress Revathy Sampath in the wake of the Hema committee report.

Siddique confirmed his resignation to The Hindu by stating that he had submitted the resignation letter to the President of AMMA, actor Mohanlal. His reasoning was the allegations against him.

He stated that his resignation was “voluntary” as it is “inappropriate to continue in that position when I am facing such an allegation.” He added that he would respond to the allegations in detail after getting legal advice on the matter.

Revathy Sampath’s Allegations

On Saturday evening, the actress spoke to the media, accusing Siddique of sexually assaulting her in 2016. The actress stated that the senior actor had called her for an audition for a “non-existent movie” in Kerala’s capital, Thiruvananthapuram. She mentioned that he had gotten in touch with her through a social media platform and offered her “a role in a Tamil movie” alongside his son.

“He had called me to this hotel”, she continued. She said that she did not doubt his intentions as he called her ‘mole’, which is a term used to endearingly call daughters in Malayalam. She understood that this meeting was a trap as she came to find out that the film she was being offered the role in “did not exist”.

She said that Siddique raped her. “He touched me without consent and physically assaulted me”, indicating that he hit and kicked her as well. She strongly stated that everything the actor is saying is “blatant lies”.

The actress, who stated that she just completed her Class 12 at the time of the assault, said, “I had to give up my dreams, my time, and I had to go through a lot of mental issues. This should happen to no one. I got justice from no door that I knocked.”

“I am fed up…”

Revathy Sampath claimed that she has no plans to file a formal complaint against the actor as she is “already traumatized” and wants to prioritize her mental peace now. She said that she had faced a lot of pressure since opening up about the assault.

This is not the first time the actress has opened up about Siddique’s assault. She had done the same during the 2019 Me Too movement.

She also brought to light the sexual assault she faced while shooting for ‘Mind Game’, a Telugu film directed by Rajesh Touchriver. She would go on to say that the director’s wife, Sunita Krishnan, who was a co-producer of the film, had treated her like a “troublemaker”. Revathy stated that she had previously admired Sunita Krishnan for being a human rights activist and a rape survivor but was disappointed when the latter did not support the budding actress.
