Mamata Banerjee to take in Bangladeshi Refugees: Shows Compliance with UN Refugee Convention

The Chief Minister of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee said on Sunday that if the affected people come knocking at the door of West Bengal, she wouldn’t let them away and let them in, showing her compliance with United Nations Refugee Convention (1951).

Mamata Banerjee said that she doesn’t have any right to comment upon the situation which arose in Bangladesh as its the work of the Central Government, but she will definitely allow the distressed people to take shelter in West Bengal.

She also addressed her compliance with the UN Refugee Convention, saying that when the refugees had a conflict with Bodos in Assam, he let the refugees take refuge in Alipurduar for a long time and also went to meet them.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee brought in the topic of the Bangladeshi unrest at the very end of her speech during the Ekushe July Shohid Divas. She guaranteed all possible assistance to everyone who is threatened by the unrest in Bangladesh and has ensured the individuals who went to Bangladesh for medical purposes, will get utmost service from the government.

The CM also cautioned the people of Bangladesh to not fall into any kind of provocation and not to create any tension. She further said that she has deep sympathy for the students who were killed and is keeping a track of the situation.

She later posted on X that as hundreds of students are returning from Bangladesh to West Bengal, she has asked the state administration to render help in every way possible. Nearly 300 students have retired to Hilli border that very day and most of them left for their destination safely. But as 35 of them needed help, the government provide basic amenities

BJP Slams Mamata Banerjee

The BJP on Sunday slammed the CM for offering shelter to the refugees, stating that the CM has no whatsoever locus standi on the matters of immigration and citizenship. This was said by the BJP co-incharge of Bengal, Amit Malviya.

They also said that it’s an “evil plan” of the INDIA bloc to let settle illegal immigrants in the country to WB and Jharkhand to get the vote bank from them.
