Mayyur Girotra has established a notable reputation for himself in the international market since the launch of his business, all the while keeping a close eye on Indian craftsmanship. Elegant clothing, striking hues, and dexterous embroidery perfectly capture Girotra’s design philosophy.

Following a triumphant debut at the NYC fashion show last year, Designer Mayyur Girotra is back with his collection Ride to Pride 2024 for the second time. The collection, which combines traditional Indian fabrics with haute design, boldly embraces diversity by incorporating genderless patterns.

Carefully constructed, each ensemble seeks to go beyond the boundaries of gender stereotypes, encouraging a feeling of inclusion and belonging for everyone. Girotra’s dedication to the LGBTQ+ community is evident in each and every design element. For him, fashion offers a haven free from limitations and judgment, a stage for self-expression and social reform. This philosophy is embodied in the Ride to Pride collection, which stands for the ideals of love, pride, and self-acceptance.

Indian crafts and colors serve as inspiration for Girotra’s maximalist designs, which combine heritage with modern flare. Every piece of clothing, from elaborate embroidery to striking designs, conveys a unique tale of ethnic diversity. Furthermore, by combining recycled silk and linen, the designer demonstrates his commitment to sustainability and combines style with social responsibility.

“I’ve always believed that fashion is much more than just attire and accessories. It is, in my opinion, more than merely a representation of India’s cultural past in design. In my opinion, it’s a way to use craft to encourage communication and discourse. Slow fashion evokes images of well-crafted, long-lasting items created with good intentions. With this collection, we hope to inspire the type of change that, while it may come gradually, will be stable and long-lasting, according to Mayyur Girotra.

Along with the brand’s iconic Mayyur Girotra embroidery, the collection has ikat designs, bespoke prints, threadwork from the brand’s history, and Gujarati Kutch patchwork. These are cut into shapes that have Indian roots yet are universal in scope. The palette of the collection alternates between sandy neutrals, bougainvillaea pink, and a delicate rainbow of colors that represent the Pride flag and Indian culture.

Ride to Pride, which embodies the genuine spirit of inclusion, will be on display during New York Pride today on June 5, 2024. The event will have a cast made up entirely of LGBTQA+ people walking the runway on 5th Avenue in New York.

Speaking with Mayyur Girotra about Pride, love, and fashion

Mayyur Girotra told to Lifestlye Asia,

You appear to have a strong emotional connection to your Pride collections. Could you explain how you came to be inspired to create for Pride and what it means to you personally?

I’ve collected these for my soul. I feel like I have a purpose because of it. In this instance, I have utilized fashion as a means to accomplish my ultimate goal of creating influence and change. Because of my relationship to the LGBTQ+ community and my aim to promote inclusiveness and diversity, designing for Pride is very personal to me. My motivation has come from the encouragement and bravery I’ve received from my friends, family, and the community. Through my creations, I constantly try to convey the freedom to be our self, love, and honesty that pride signifies. It’s more than simply a conversation, in my opinion; it’s about honoring the community’s journey and promoting equality and inclusion.

You have always been an outspoken supporter of the LGBTQ+ community. Do you think the fashion and entertainment industries have done enough to help the community?

Yes, I think the LGBTQ+ community has benefited much from the efforts made by the fashion and entertainment sectors. Diversity and representation are becoming increasingly important, as more filmmakers and designers are presenting a range of perspectives and narratives. Still, a lot of effort has to be done to accomplish genuine representation and equality. To guarantee that all views are heard and acknowledged, ongoing efforts are required to tear down barriers.

Could you take us through “Ride to Pride’s” creative process? With this anthology, what kinds of stories and feelings were you attempting to convey?

‘Ride to Pride’ was conceived with inclusiveness, diversity, and togetherness as central themes. I used strong colors, designs, and needlework to try to convey the lively and tenacious attitude of the LGBTQ+ community. Each sculpture, which draws inspiration from the community’s experiences and tales, conveys messages of love and inclusion.

Traditional Indian fabrics are paired with international fashions in your selection. Which particular creative or cultural factors influenced “Ride to Pride”?

“Ride to Pride” is influenced by both international fashion trends and customary Indian handicraft. To combine modern shapes with Indian embroidery traditions like Kantha and Kutch work, I created a combination of cultural tradition and modernity. The items’ global designs make them contemporary and approachable to a global audience, while the vivid colors and intricate patterns capture the diversity and richness of Indian textiles. This range includes bespoke prints, ikat designs, and threadwork from the brand’s past. These are cut into shapes that have Indian roots yet are universal in scope.

With the collection getting ready to walk at New York Pride Runway on June 5th, Girotra’s idea of bringing about change via art and dialogue takes center stage. The show, which features a cast of all-LGBTQ+ models, is expected to be a celebration of variety and resiliency and a major turning point in the movement for inclusiveness and acceptance in the fashion industry.
