About Merry Christmas:

Director and writer Sriram Raghavan’s new movie Merry Christmas is a full package of Suspense, crime, thriller, drama, murder mystery and romance. After his incredible work in Andhadhun with Ayushmann Khurrana and Tabu, five years later he is back with another thrilling spectacular story. Raghavan’s new movie Merry Christmas is not just an ordinary love story but it has much more than that with death, darkness etc, it’s not about the usual pairing between two district actors – Vijay Sethupathi and Katrina Kaif.

Unlike today’s movies full of action or brotherhood or partnership dramas, it will give you another level of goosebumps you rarely feel. This film’s narrative or story is not very patchy or rushed, but slow burning with intriguing and gripping content which keeps you in your seat. Without any unnecessary, boring, dull moments this film gives a soaking, analytical depth.

Plot of Merry Christmas:

Merry Christmas is based on a concept of faithfulness of Christmas eves where Albert (Vijay Sethupathi) comes back from Dubai to India mainly in Mumbai as he claims. After coming back he knows that his mother has passed away. He takes a stroll in Mumbai and goes to a lavish restaurant to treat himself. There he meets with Maria (Katrina Kaif) who has been cancelled by her date because she brought her daughter with her.

Their eyes met for a few seconds as they both crossed their path once again in the theatre. As the story goes they come closer as Albert comes to Maria’s old fashioned Apartment, later he finds himself in a crime scene, despite all his chances to escape, he decided to help Maria in this condition.

Raghavan’s murder mystery movie Merry Christmas has several delectable moments as well. The dancing scene on Christmas Eve of Albert and Maria in her apartment was truly amazing though some of their hearts make you laugh. With the green wallpaper, dim light, red curtains and the Christmas tree just give a perfect touch to enhance this scene. Undoubtedly Daniel B George, the background scorer did an excellent job in this film and make every scene more effective and important to build the intensity of this movie.

The close up shots of the props provide the relevance of this scene, not to mention the opening shot, the teddy bear, the origami, bird in the cage, fish in the aquarium, buttons in the lift. Including the leading actors, the supporting actors and these elements also worked greatly to explain and glorify its storyline. Actually Raghavan used references of veterans and classical films. In the background Amitabh Bachchan’s young aged photo, 1973s movie Raja Rani’s song Jab Andhera Hota Hai Aadhi Raat Ke Baad make the scene more realistic and make audiences feel nostalgic.

Thrilling Parts of Merry Christmas:

Though this film is based on Le Monte-charge, written by Frédéric Dard, this film doesn’t provide complicated screenplays, rather they use simple and easygoing scenario. As the story goes the twist and turns factor never feels like a lack of wow moments or never goes over the top. This film has its own unique high point but they are all surrounded by thrills. The last 30 minutes of the climax is really nail biting but the ending is okay okay type as it could have been better in terms of storytelling and writing. However this film left you thinking about every factor and discussion with your friends.

The characters and their acting:

Every character of this film undoubtedly played amazing jobs, as every character has its own relevance and importance in this film. The dialogues of this film are not so wow type or extraordinary, but the subtle humour is. In that funny scene where Vijay says one line with a poker face. Seriously, those scenes are enough to understand how amazing an actor he is because it’s really difficult to understand whether he is acting or he is Albert. After Jawan, his acting in this film makes this film more awesome.

On the other hand Katrina Kaif‘s acting, body language, and expression is just so perfect. Her emotions never feel sketchy even for a moment, she maintains her characters mysterious and more interesting, after Tiger 3, seeing Katrina is this film which is so different it refers to how extraordinary an actress she is. I also love the fact that Raghavan doesn’t try to make the characters look extra sensuous or flamboyant, instead he maintains the characters’ simplicity.

Sanjay Kapoor, Radhika Apte, Tinnu Anand, Ashwini Kalsekar, Vinay Pathak, Pratima Kazmi also played very crucial roles in this film. There smallest part of this film also made Raghavan’s story more attractive.

Final thoughts:

I think this film is really good, not like very suspicious or something but very good and also very engaging. In my opinion this film is very appreciative in terms of acting and storytelling, however the climax is not that much good, as I expected from this film but not so bloopers. I think you should also watch and give it a chance.
