Fans of high fashion and sharp wit can rejoice: Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, and Emily Blunt are set to return in the much-anticipated sequel to the iconic comedy-drama, ‘The Devil Wears Prada.’

In the original film, Meryl Streep captivated audiences as Miranda Priestly, the formidable editor-in-chief of Runway magazine. Anne Hathaway and Emily Blunt played her beleaguered assistants, Andrea Sachs and Emily Charlton, respectively. The 2006 release by 20th Century Fox garnered a massive global box office haul of $326.7 million, cementing its place in popular culture with memorable quotes and scenes frequently resurfacing as internet memes.

The first film followed Andy Sachs, a fresh college graduate who lands a job as an assistant to Miranda Priestly, one of New York’s most feared magazine editors. Andy’s life is turned upside down by Priestly’s unrelenting demands and high expectations.

The sequel’s storyline is rumoured to revolve around Miranda Priestly navigating her career amidst the decline of traditional magazine publishing. This time, she faces off against her former assistant, Emily Charlton, who has risen to a powerful position in a luxury business. This new dynamic promises an engaging exploration of the evolving fashion industry and career transformations.

Though the full returning cast has not been confirmed, key figures from the original production are expected to rejoin. David Frankel, who directed the first movie, is reportedly in discussions to return, along with producer Wendy Finerman. Aline Brosh McKenna, the screenwriter of the original film, known for her work on ‘Crazy Ex-Girlfriend‘ and ‘We Bought a Zoo,’ and her recent Netflix rom-com ‘Your Place or Mine,’ is set to pen the script once again.

The original ‘The Devil Wears Prada‘ was based on Lauren Weisberger’s 2003 novel, inspired by her real-life experience as an assistant to Vogue editor Anna Wintour. Meryl Streep’s performance earned her a Golden Globe and an Academy Award nomination, while the film’s costume designer, Patricia Field, also received an Oscar nod, highlighting the film’s significant impact.

The announcement of the sequel comes amid a resurgence of interest in revisiting beloved films from the early 2000s. Streep, Hathaway, and Blunt recently reignited excitement by reuniting at the 2024 SAG Awards, where they reminisced about their iconic roles and delivered memorable lines from the film.

The original cast included notable performances by Adrian Grenier, Stanley Tucci, Simon Baker, Gisele Bündchen, Tracie Thoms, Rich Sommer, Daniel Sunjata, Rebecca Mader, Alyssa Sutherland, James Naughton, and David Callegati. Fans are eager to see which of these characters will return for the sequel.

While specific details remain scarce, Disney‘s effort to bring back the original cast and crew indicates that the sequel aims to capture the same charm and appeal that made the first film a timeless classic. With an updated narrative reflecting current industry trends and a stellar ensemble cast, ‘The Devil Wears Prada’ sequel is set to be a highly anticipated cinematic event.
