Manmohan Singh, the former prime minister, asked Punjabi voters on Thursday to defend democracy and the constitution against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), claiming that Punjab was the BJP’s target due to the removal of the three agricultural laws. Singh responded to PM Modi’s statement in this letter, claiming that he is the first prime minister to have diminished the dignity of the PM’s office.

Singh argues that the BJP’s policies have adversely affected farmers’ income, leading to a meager monthly average income and high debt. In contrast, he praises the Congress-UPA government’s efforts in providing loan waivers, increasing MSP, and promoting agricultural growth.
Singh also outlines the Congress party’s guarantees for farmers in their manifesto, including legal guarantees for MSP, a stable export-import policy, a commission on agricultural finance, direct transfer of compensation for crop losses, and removal of GST on farm inputs. He believes that these steps will pave the way for the second generation of agricultural reforms.
He discusses the economic turmoil experienced in the past 10 years, which includes the negative impact of demonetization, the flawed GST implementation, and mismanagement during the COVID pandemic.
They highlight the decrease in GDP growth under the BJP government compared to the Congress-UPA tenure and the increase in unemployment and inflation, leading to widening inequality.
Singh also criticises the BJP government’s handling of the youth, mentioning the high number of government vacancies and paper leaks that have affected their future prospects. They propose the Yuva Nyay guarantees, which aim to address these issues and establish a Right to Apprenticeship program. He promises to systematically fill vacancies, reserve half of the jobs for women, and establish fast-track courts for paper leak cases.
The Agniveer Scheme imposed on the Armed Forces by the BJP government is criticized for its short duration and potential risk to national security. He pledges to abolish this scheme.The Congress-UPA government’s efforts in Punjab are highlighted, including the implementation of the Amritsar-Kolkata Industrial Corridor, the establishment of an oil refinery in Bhatinda, the construction of an IT center and a National Law University, and the inauguration of the Shaheed Bhagat Singh memorial.
