MS SWAMINATHAN popularly known as the father of INDIA’S ICONIC GREEN REVOLUTION passes away at the age 98 at his Chennai occupancy around 11:20 am on Thursday. He was undergoing treatment for some age-related illness for quite some time, as said by MS SWAMINATHAN foundation.

Mankombu Sambasivan Swaminathan also known as MS Swaminathan was born on 7th August 1925 in Madras Presidency (currently known as Tamil Nadu) in India. He was an Indian geneticist and international administrator, renowned for his leading role in India’s “green revolution” a programme under which high yield varieties of wheat and rice seedlings were planted.
He has a post doctorate degree. He completed his education from famous institutions like University of Kerala, University of Cambridge, Indian Agricultural Research Institute, Wageningen University, University of Wisconsin etc.

Swaminathan was named the first World Food Prize in the year 1987. Felicitated with various awards such as Padma Shri in 1967, Ramon Magsaysay Award in 1971, Padma Bhushan in 1972, World Food Prize in 1987, Padma Vibhushan in 1989,and many more.
His leadership as Director General of the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) in the Philippines was instrumental in his being awarded the first World Food Prize in 1987, recognized as the Nobel or the highest honours in the field of agriculture. He was appointed Director of the Indian Agricultural Research Institute in 1961 to 1972, Director General of ICAR & secretary to the government of India, Department of Agricultural Research and education from 1972 to 79, principal secretary, ministry of agriculture (1979-80) and many more.
In 2004, he was appointed as chairperson of the National Commission on Farmers, the commission setup to look into distress and alarming suicide cases. He had written a few books on the general theme of his life’s work, biodiversity and sustainable agriculture for alleviation of hunger.
He would always be remembered as prominent and a successful leader, who always thought of well-being of the country.
