Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu pushed back against growing calls for a ceasefire in Gaza on Monday, despite massive demurrers in Israel and adding pressure from US President Joe Biden.

In his first public address since the demurrers, Netanyahu claimed on maintaining Israeli control over the Philadelphi corridor, a narrow strip along Gaza’s border with Egypt.

Israel believes this corridor is used by Hamas to smuggle munitions into Gaza, though Egypt and Hamas deny the claim.

Netanyahu described the corridor as vital to precluding Hamas from rearming, calling it the group’s “ oxygen. ” He also emphasized his commitment to the hostages, stating, “ No one is more associated with freeing the hostages than me. No one will sermonize me on this issue. ”
